황석영의 『손님』에 나타난 화해와 치유의 글쓰기 전략

국문 초록

본고는 한국 문단에서 전형적인 리얼리즘 작가로 평가받아온 황석영이 작품 『손님』을 통해 이전 작품들과는 다른 글쓰기 전략을 취하고 있다는 데에 주목하여, 『손님』에 나타나는 다양한 글쓰기 전략과 그로부터 생성되는 의미를 파악하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 『손님』에 등장하는 ‘영혼’은 소설 전체를 이끌어가는 환상적 장치로 남북 이념 갈등이라는 현실 문제를 객관화시키는 기능을 한다. 이에 본고에서는 『손님』을 환상적 리얼리즘 작품으로 전제하고 굿을 차용한 서사, 공간의 해체와 확장, 언술의 다성성 등을 고찰함으로써 황석영의 글쓰기 전략을 탐색하였다. 『손님』은 등장인물들이 갈등을 해결해 나가는 방식을 황해도 지노귀굿의 제차와 상응하게 구성하여 굿의 형식을 서사의 틀로 삼고, 작품 속 등장인물뿐 아니라 독자에 이르기까지 화해를 경험하게 함으로써 굿의 기능적인 부분까지 수용하고 있다. 『손님』에서는 산 자와 죽은 자가 한 공간 안에 존재함으로써 현실 공간의 해체와 확장이 나타난다. 영혼의 출현으로 확장되었던 현실공간은 영혼들의 해원 후 과거 갈등이 해소되어 상생을 모색하는 산 자들의 공간으로 전환된다. 한편 등장인물에 따라 시점을 달리하는 서술 방식은 한 존재의 발화로 대변될 수 없는 이념 문제를 보다 객관적인 시선으로 접근하고자 한 작가의 의지가 구현된 서술 전략이다. 본고는 황석영의 이러한 다양한 글쓰기 전략을 분석함으로써 『손님』에 구현된 황석영의 서술 의도와 작가의 과거 작품들과 달라진 서술 전략을 고찰하였다는 데에 그 의의가 있다. 본고가 분단 문학의 변화 양상을 살피는 데에 기여하기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

This research, focusing on that Hwang Seok Yeong who has been evaluated as a typical realism writer in Korean literary world adopted different strategy from his previous works through his work The Guest, is to understand the various writing strategies and the meanings generated from it. ‘The spirit’ appeared in The Guest is the imaginary measure to lead the whole story and it objectifies the actual problem of ideological conflict between North and South. So on the premise of that The Guest is the work of fantastic realism, it explored Hwang Seok Yeong’s writing strategy through the examination of the narratives borrowing gut, the deconstruction and expansion of space and the diversity of statement. In The Guest, the way that characters solve their conflict is organized according to the order of jinogui gut of Hwanghae province so the type of gut becomes the framework of narrative. And by the experience of reconciliation of the readers as well as the characters in the work, it also has the function of gut. The Guest, the living and the dead exist in the same place and it brings about the deconstruction and expansion of actual space. The actual space which was expanded by the emergence of the souls is transformed into the space for the living who seeks for the coexistence after the souls recover their piece in mind and resolve their past conflict. Meanwhile, the narrative method which changes the point of view according to characters is the narrative strategy which shows the will of writer to approach with more objective eyes to the ideological problem that cannot be represented by the words of one person. This research has its own meaning that it examined Hwang Seok Yeong’s narrative intention represented in The Guest and the narrative strategy changed from his previous works through the analysis his various writing strategies. I expect that this research would contribute to the examination of the changing aspect of division literature.
