행동적 기업이론에 기반한 중소기업의 열망과 혁신활동의 관계 연구

국문 초록

그간 기업의 혁신활동을 결정하는 대표적 요인으로서 기업규모, 경쟁강도, 기업의 열망수준 등에 대해 상당한 이론적 논의가 있었으나, 아직까지 일치된 합의나 종합적 관점에서 실증적으로 분석한 연구는 부족한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 기존 논의들에 기반하여 변수를 설계하고, 계량경제모형을 활용해 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 기업규모 및 경쟁강도, 열망수준 등은 유의한 것으로 나타나, 선행연구들의 주장을 대체로 지지하는 결과를 보였다. 기업규모 및 경쟁강도는 혁신활동 간 비선형적 관계가 관측되지 않았던 반면, 열망수준은 2차항 및 3차항 변수가 유의하게 관측되었다. 열망수준이 낮은 구간에서는 한계효과가 극단의 수준에서만 증가하고 그 외의 수준에서는 큰 차이를 보이지 않았으며, 반대로 열망수준이 높은 구간에서는 초기에 미미한 수준으로 증가하다가 점차 그 증가폭이 확대되었다. 이는 최상위 수준의 성과를 창출한 기업군에서는 혁신노력을 지속하기보다 위험을 회피하는 경향이 있으며, 기업성과가 산업평균에 비해 미흡할수록 혁신노력이 강화되는 것을 의미한다. 물론 후자의 경우 본 연구에서 혁신활동을 연구개발 집약도로 측정하고 있는 만큼 분모에 해당하는 매출액 규모가 매우 작은 데 기인한 결과일 수 있으나, 한편으로는 혁신이 기업의 생존 및 성장을 가능하게 하는 핵심요인이라는 인식이 과거에 비해 상대적으로 확산되었다는 점에서, 국내 중소기업들이 생존을 모색하는 전략으로서 연구개발을 중시하고 있는 것은 아닐지 추측해볼 수도 있다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

Although there have been considerable theoretical discussions on the firm size, the intensity of competition, and the level of aspiration of the enterprise as the representative factors in determining the innovative activities of the enterprise, research that has been empirically analyzed from a consensus or a comprehensive perspective is still lacking. In this study, variables were designed based on early studies and empirically analyzed. The results indicate that the size of firm, the intensity of competition, the level of aspiration, etc. were significant, and that they generally agreed the arguments of the preceding studies. While a non-linear relationship between innovation activities was not observed for the firm size and the intensity of the competition, the level of aspiration was significantly observed for both square and cube of the variable. The marginal effect increase only at the extreme level and showed no significant difference at the other level in the case of the lower level of aspiration, whereas at the other end, the increase was gradually expanded after the initial slight increase at the higher level of aspiration level. This means that the group of companies that generated the highest level of performance tends to hedge risk rather than continue innovation efforts, and that the less successful the enterprise performance is compared to the industrial mean, the more the innovation effort is strengthened. Of course, the latter may be the result of a very small amount of revenue equivalent to denominator, as the innovation activity is measured in terms of R&D intensity, but on the other hand, the perception that innovation is a key factor enabling the survival and growth of the enterprise has been relatively widespread over the past may suggest that SMEs in Korea may value R&D as a strategy to seek survival.
