국문 초록

이 글은 1960~1970년대 태국의 청년문화 전개를 대중음악의 발전과 연관해 논한다. 당시 태국 및 동남아시아 권역의 문화정치적 정세를 베트남전쟁을 중심으로 하는 냉전의 국제적 전개로 설명하고, 미군의 베트남전쟁 개입과 태국 정부가 미군을 지원하는 상황에서 태국 사회의 문화적 변환 과정을 논한다. 대중음악의 분야에서 여러 갈래의 서양(미국) 대중음악이 태국 사회에 수입되어 다양한 계층의 태국인들에게 미친 영향, 그리고 이 영향을 수용·영유하는 과정과 양상을 다룬다. 특히 당시 대학생들의 문화에 왜 그리고 어떻게 미국의 포크 음악(folk music)이 가장 넓고 깊은 영향력을 미쳤는지를 방송 및 음반 등 미디어의 상황, 음악을 연주하는 공적 공간의 생성, 청년문화에 대한 문화적 담론의 전개 등과 연관해 분석한다. 이어 1973년 학생 혁명의 성공부터 1976년 군부정권의 학살에 이르는 시기에 수입된 포크 음악이 플렝푸아 치위트(phleng phua chiwit: 삶을 위한 노래)라는 토착화된 음악으로 진화하고, 이 음악이 당시 좌파 정치와 연관되는 복잡한 양상을 당시의 대표적 곡들과 음악가들을 통해 재조명한다. 플렝 푸아 치위트 및 대중음악 전반에 대한 논의는 당시 청년문화에 대한 문화적 담론, 특히 지식인(punyachon)에 대한 담론과 접속되어 상세하게 논구된다. 마지막으로 당시의 경험이 이후 태국의 음악문화에 미치는 복잡미묘한 효과에 대해 일정한 함의를 추출한다.

영문 초록

This paper discusses 1960~1970’s youth culture in Thailand from the angle of the evolution (or revolution) of popular music. After connecting the cultural-political conjuncture in Thailand and Southeast Asia with the international continuation of Cold War politics by U.S., which was accompanied by ‘hot war’ in Vietnam and the support by Thai government, the process of cultural transformation of Thai society is dealt with. In the cultural field of popular music, how did different styles of Western (American) pop music exert complicated influences to different members of This society. Especially, the reason why American folk music had strong influence to university students is analyzed from multiple angles such as the conditions of broadcasting media, the creation of public spaces for music performance and the discourses about youth culture. Then, the focus is moved to the songs and artists of phleng pjua chiwit (song for life) which was the product of indigenization of American folk music and was actively engaged with left-wing politics by student movement in the period between 1973 and 1976 when Thai society had been democratized. The discussion about phleng phua chiwit and popular music in general is dealt with in conjunction with cultural discourses on youth culture, especially those on intellectuals (punyachon). Finally some implication of its complicated effects on the present condition of popular music in Thailand will be found out.
