국문 초록

이 글은 일제 말기에 창작된 대중가요의 개작이 어떤 양상을 띠고 있고 그 개작 양상이 보여주는 의미가 무엇인가를 논구하는 글이다. 즉, 중일전쟁 발발 즈음부터 변화를 보였던 일제 말기 대중가요의 특정 경향인 노골적 친일성, 아시아적 이국성 등이 해방 후라는 전혀 다른 정치·사회 상황 속에서 개작되는 양상과 그것의 의미를 탐구하는 것이 이 글의 목적이다. 이는 해방 후 우리나라 대중가요계와 우리 사회가 일제 말의 지배이데올로기를 어떤 방식으로 처리했는지(그것이 극복이든 부분적 계승이든), 그로써 당대 우리 사회와 대중가요계를 지배하고 있던 정치·사회의식이 어떤 것이었는지를 추론해 보는 일이다. 개작 양상은 크게 두 가지로 나타난다. 첫째는 노골적 친일성을 드러낸 작품에서 ‘일본에 대한 충성’을 ‘대한민국에 대한 충성’으로 바꾸는 경우이고, 둘째는 아시아적 이국성을 띤 작품에서 배경이 되는 외국을 한국으로 환치하는 경우이다. 어느 쪽이든 작품의 근간이 되는 구조와 미의식, 세계관 등은 고스란히 남긴 채, 표피적 부분만 건드렸다는 공통점이 있다. 특히 정치·사회의식과 관련해서 본다면, 친일성의 청산에 초점을 맞추기보다는, 새로운 지배 이데올로기가 된 냉전적 반공주의에 적응하려는 노력이 훨씬 더 두드러진다. 이는 한편으로 대중가요의 창작자와 수용자들이 대중가요 작품이 지닌 정치·사회의식을 인식하는 수준을 보여주는 것이면서, 다른 한편으로는 이 시기 대중들의 정치의식과 사유방식이 식민지 후반기의 그것과 단절되어 있다기보다는 매우 연속성을 띠고 있음을 말해주는 것이기도 하다.

영문 초록

This paper is to examine how popular songs of the late Japanese Rule were re-made after the country’s Independence and what their meanings are. That is to look into how those songs’ pro-Japanese tendency and Asian Exoticism of late Japanese Rule ― particularly after the Sino-Japanese War ― were later re-made in a totally changed social and political contexts after the Independence and what their meanings were. In other words, it is to study how songs loyal to the ruling ideology of late Japanese Rule were treated by emancipated local pop music scene and society ― whether they were overcome or kept not intact but partly ― and to infer social and political consciousness which were dominant in the Korean society and pop music scene after the Independence. Re-makes were done in two ways. First, for those bluntly pro-Japanese songs, lyrics like ‘loyalty to Japan’ was changed into ‘loyalty to Korea’. Second, songs set in exotic Asian countries were put in local towns. However, in both cases, their structure, aesthetics or world view which are critical in a song remained intact but some superficial elements were touched. Particularly, in terms of social and political consciousness, efforts to adapt to a new ruling ideology of anti-Communism in the Cold War era were more prominent than those to rule out pro-Japanese elements of the past. These facts show the level of which both public and artists under-stood popular songs’s social and political significances and that a political awareness and thinking of the time didn’t break out of but succeeded those of the late Japanese Rule.
