퓨전음악에 있어서 대중음악의 미학적 자리매김

국문 초록

21세기 한국 음악의 미학을 논하려 할 때, 기존의 한국 음악 관련 연구에서 비중 있게 다루었던 ‘한’이나 ‘흥’으로는 충분히 설명되지 못하는 경우가 많다. 특히 국악과 대중음악, 클래식음악이 한데 어우러져 만들어진 퓨전음악의 수요가 늘어나면서 새로운 시각의 미학적 접근이 요구되었다. 그럼에도 음악 학계의 관점은 큰 변화를 보이지 않고 있다. 이 글은 변화하고 있는 현재 한국 음악의 미학을 퓨전음악 중심으로 살펴보고자 하며, 특히 퓨전음악에서 대중 음악이 자리하고 있는 미학적 정체성을 조명한다. 이 글은 일종의 사례연구(case study) 형식으로 이루어졌다. 특히 2008년 1학기 수원대학교 음악대학 미학 수업에서 제출되었던 프로젝트의 사례들을 분석했다. 프로젝트의 대주제는 ‘현대 한국 음악의 미학’이었으며, 접근방식은 창작자를 포함해 수용자의 의견과 감성을 적극적으로 고려하는 음악인류학적 방법을 취했다. 이 글에서는 기존의 음악대학 커리큘럼에서 비롯된 학생들의 시각적 한계도 심도 있게 다루고 있다. 제도권 음악교육에서 형성된 작가 중심의 음악관은 유럽 예술음악에 한정되는 특수견해임에도 다른 음악 분야의 연구에도 깊이 영향을 미치고 있어서, 대중음악에 있어 중요한 부분을 점하는 집단적 음악경험을 중요하게 다루지 않는 경향이 있다. 그뿐 아니라 절대적인 음악미를 추구하는 시각은 음악대학의 음악미학 커리큘럼에서 ‘현재’라는 역사성과 ‘한국’이라는 지역성을 고려해야 하는 ‘종족 미학’을 간과한다. 다시 말해서, 퓨전음악의 미학적 담론에서 한국 대중음악은 결코 중심이 되지 못하고 주변적 존재에 머무르고 있으며, 중심은 여전히 국악의 전통미학에 있다는 것이다. ‘전통’에 대한 경직된 사고는 실제 음악이 변화하고 있음에도 여전히 미학적 담론을 과거에 머무르게 하는 결과를 초래한다. 이에 이 글은 좀 더 유연한 개념의 전통을 소개하며, 현재 속에서 새로운 의미가 덧입혀지는 ‘만들어져 가는’ 전통에 초점을 두려 한다. 결론적으로 변화하고 있는 퓨전음악에 있어 대중음악의 미학적 정체성을 살펴보면서 부분적으로나마 한국적인 대중음악에 대한 미학적 담론체계를 만들어보고자 한다.

영문 초록

Previous studies of Korean Music that focused on ‘Han’ or ‘Heung’ cannot fully explain the Aesthetics of the 21st-Century Korean Music. As the demand for fusion music ― the newly formed music synthesizing Korean traditional music, popular music, and European art music ―grows, it is necessary to develop a new approach to contemporary Korean music. However, the viewpoint of the academic research on con-temporary Korean music has hardly changed. This paper deals with the aesthetic identity of Korean popular music expressed in the form of fu-sion music. This work is a case study, and concentrates on college students’ project papers submitted for the course ‘Music Aesthetics’ in the 2008 spring semester at Suwon University. The main thesis of the project was ‘Aesthetics of Contemporary Korean Music’, and the fundamental approach taken for this project was based upon Ethnomusicology, which seriously interrogates collective experiences of various groups of people involved in the music production and consumption. This paper also brings attention to the Euro-centric viewpoint of music major students in Korea. The majority of Korean music schools have focused on the composer-centered viewpoints rather than the collective musical experience of the listeners, which is one of the most important elements in popular music culture. In addition, the transcendent beauty of music admired in the music curriculum at college level tends to disregard ethno-aesthetics of Korean music that includes ‘time[present]’ aspect and ‘space[Korea]’ specificity of contemporary Korean music. For this reason, Korean popular mu-sic is regarded as a peripheral musical element, while traditional Korean music is the central one in contemporary Korean fusion music. This paper suggests an alternative concept of ‘tradition’, which can illustrate the dynamic transformation process of contemporary Korean music. Tradition is relentlessly changing, reflecting on present values that present people pursue. In conclusion, this paper tries to explain Korean popular music aesthetics through examining the aesthetic identity of popular music in contemporary fusion music.
