국문 초록

이 글은 관습적으로 해방 후 한국에 본격적으로 수용되었다고 인식되곤 하는 미국 대중음악이 이미 1930년경부터 수용되고 있었다고 주장한다. 미국 대중음악이 일제 시기부터 수용되고 있었다는 주장 자체는 새롭지 않지만, 이 글이 주목하는 지점은 미국 대중음악의 수용이 이미 이 시기부터 문제적현상이었다는 것, 나아가 그 문제성이 해방 후에도 여전히 해결되지 않은 채지속되었다는 것이다. 그렇다면 그 문제성의 의미는 어떤 것일까? 식민지기 조선의 담론장 안에서 재즈로 대표되는 미국 대중음악을 어떻게볼 것인가라는 질문은 매우 대답하기 질문이었다. 그것은 단지 미국 대중문화의 일부를 수용하는 문제를 넘어서, ‘미국적인 것’, ‘일본적인 것’, ‘조선적인 것’이라는 문화권력의 삼각구도 안에서 막 형성되고 있던 조선 대중음악의 자리를 찾는 문제의 일부였기 때문이다. ‘미국적인 것’이 ‘서구적인 것’, 나아가 ‘세계적인 것’을 상징했다면, ‘일본적인 것’은 그와 경합하는 ‘제국적인 것’ 이면서 동시에 ‘식민주의적인 것’을 내포했다. 식민지 조선의 지식인, 엘리트, 문화예술인들은 그 압도적인 문화적 힘들 사이에서 ‘조선적인 것’, 즉 ‘토속 적’이거나 ‘민족적인 것’의 위치를 찾아내야 한다는 중압감에 시달렸다. 해방 이후 한국의 문화지형은 철저히 ‘미국화’의 관점에서 설명되곤 하지 만, 실제로는 강력한 반일주의 표방에도 불구하고 제국일본이 남긴 문화적 영향력은 강력히 지속하고 있었고, 민족주의적 지향 또한 호소력을 갖고 있었 다. 해방이라는 거대한 단절에 따른 상대적인 영향력 크기, 존재 방식에는 적지 않은 변화가 있었지만 문화권력의 삼각구도 자체는 지속하고 있었다. 이삼각구도 안에서 ‘민족적인 것’, ‘한국적인 것’을 찾는다는 시도는 여전히 난관에 부딪히고 있었는데, 이는 정치적 독립에도 불구하고 한국사회의 문화적 연속성이 여전했음을 함축한다.

영문 초록

For quite some time, there has been a widespread perception in Korea that American popular music has been accepted since the 1945’s liberation. However, this article argues that American popular music had already been accepted since around 1930. In fact, the argument itself that American popular music had been being accepted since the Japanese colonial period is not new. The points of this article are as follows; First, in the discourse-field of the Korean intellectuals and musicians, the acceptance of American musie was already a problematic phenomenon. Second, the problem continued unresolved after liberation. So what is the meaning of the problem? The question of how to view American popular music represented by jazz was very difficult to answer for the intellectuals and musicians of colonial Korea. It was more than just accepting a part of American popular culture. It was a part of the problem of finding the place of Korean popular music, which was just forming inside the cultural triangle of ‘the American’, ‘the Japanese’, and ‘the Korean’. ‘The American’ symbolized‘the Western’ and even ‘the global’. On the other hand, ‘the Japanese’ implied both ‘the imperial’ and ‘the colonial’ competing with ‘the American’. Intellectuals and musicians of colonial Korea were under pressure to find the location of ‘the Korean’ among those overwhelming cultural powers. Their attempts were mostly appropriated as a part of ‘the Oriental’ of Japan, an empire opposed to the ‘the American-Western’. Since liberation, Korea’s cultural landscape has been usually explained from the perspective of thorough ‘Americanization’. In reality, however, despite strong anti-Japanese slogans, the cultural influence left by the imperial Japan remained strong. And nationalist orientation also had an appeal. There were significant changes after liberation, but the cultural triangle itself persisted. Attempts to find ‘the Korean’ within the triangle were still running into difficulties. This implies that despite political independence, cultural continuity remains in Korean society.
