한나 아렌트, ‘판단’ 개념의 교육적 의의

국문 초록

이 연구는 개인의 취향을 중시하는 요즘 학생들이 개인의 독특한 특이성을 공적영역에서 소통하지 않음으로 생기는 일종의 주관화 경향에 대한 문제의식으로서, 개인의 특이한 취향의 소통가능성을 모색하고자 하는 시도라고 할 수 있다. 이와 같은 문제의식에서 이 연구에서는 개인적인 방식으로 세계를 보살피는 태도로 제안되었던 아렌트의 판단개념을 탐색함으로써 이에 대한 사점을 얻고자 한다. 아렌트의 판단개념은 공적영역에서 작동하는 정신능력으로 제시되었기 때문에 먼저, 아렌트의 공적영역 개념이 무엇인지를 예비적 고찰로 살펴본다. 아렌트는 ‘공동의 세계’와 ‘타인들의 현존’이라는 두 가지 공적인 것의 의미를 제시하고, 이 두 가지 계기를 통하여 형성되는 것이 타인과 소통하는 공간으로서의 공적영역이라고 밝히고 있다. 이어서 공적영역에서 작동하는 판단개념의 전개과정을 살펴본다. 이를 위해 칸트의 취미판단과 아렌트의 판단개념의 공통점과 차이점을 살펴보고, 판단의 주요요소를 통해 판단의 과정을 살펴본다. 이를 통해 아렌트의 판단개념은 공적인 것의 두 가지 계기와 긴밀한 관련을 맺고 있음을 드러내고, 이 때의 판단은 공적영역에서 작동하는 일종의 공통감각의 성격을 지닌다는 것을 보이고자 한다. 이어지는 4 장에서는 아렌트가 판단을 잘 행사하는 사람의 이상으로 제시한 cultura animi 의 개념을 통해 판단개념의 교육적 시사점을 살펴본다. 이는 곧 교육받은 사람이 갖추어야 할 인문적 자질과 관련된다는 것을 밝히는 작업이 될 것이다. 아렌트의 판단개념은 우리 각 개인의 주관적인 감각이 어떻게 공적으로 소통가능한 형식을 갖춘 공동의 감각으로 연결되는지를 보여줌으로써, 개인의 취향을 자유롭게 행사하는 사람이 어떻게 이 세계를 잘 보살피는 사람으로 될 수 있는지와 관련 하여 우리에게 시사하는 바가 크다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The phenomenon this study focuses on is a sort of tendency for subjectivity caused by modern day students who, out of a stress on the importance of ‘personal taste’, lack the communication of their unique subjectivity in the public realm. So the intention of this study is to find a point where the personal, unique subjectivity does not contradict the possibility of communication with others. In this sense, this paper explores the concept of judging drawing upon Hannah Arendt, who reinterpret Kant’s taste judgement as a public sense working in the public realm. For this purpose, I discusses the meaning of the public realm drawing upon the two concepts of ‘the public’ by Arendt. Arendt argues that the concept of the public consists of two distinct as well as related meaning: the common world that we share on the one hand, and the appearance caused by the presence of others on the other, and what is formed through these two is the public realm as an area for communication with others. On the next step, I will discuss the characteristics of the concept of judging, which Arendt has emphasized, as the very attitude required for the restoration of public realm. Arendt’s concept of judging is a kind of contradictory concept, because it is a sort of common sense which operates in the community on the one hand, but it originates from each person’s private taste on phenomenon oh the other. This raises the question how this unique private taste turns into public judgement. I will argue that the process of judgment is deeply associated with the two meaning of ‘the public’ which consist of the common world and the presence of others. This concept of judging, which is distinguished from logical reasoning, gives us a clue about how an individual s subjective taste can morph into a public sense in the form of a general, communicable manner.
