국문 초록

기억은 정신적 작용과 관련된 것이기 때문에 직접 관찰할 수가 없어서 기억에 대해 논의를 하려면 은유를 쓰게 된다. 이 연구에서는 국어형태론 논문을 대상으로 삼아 ‘단어 정보의 기억’을 기술하는 데 쓰인 은유를 검토하였다. 학술 영역에서 은유는 단순히 내용을 설명하는 기능만을 하는 것이 아니라 이론을 구성하는 기능(은유의 이론 구성적 기능)을 할 수 있다는 점을 주된 이론적 배경으로 하였다. 기억의 장소 (어휘부) 및 기억된 정보와 관련하여 ‘안팎이 있는 공간과 그 안의 물체, 어떤 면 面)과 그곳에 쓰여 있거나 새겨져 있는 내용, 유체로 채워진 공간과 흘러 다니지 못하게 고정된 물체, 그물망 모양의 구조물과 그 구조물의 절점들, 컴퓨터의 저장 공간과 그 안의 정보’라는 다섯 가지 은유를 확인하였다. 단어 정보 기억 논의에 쓰인 은유를 검토하는 것은 연구자로 하여금 논의에 은유가 쓰인다는 점을 의식하게 하고, 현재의 논의에서 어떤 것이 강조되어 있고 어떤 부분이 상대적으로 간과되어 있는지를 생각해 보게 한다는 의의가 있다. 쓰인 은유에 따라 이론에서 강조되는 부분과 이론이 확장되는 방향이 결정될 수 있기 때문에 어떤 은유가 쓰이는지, 이 은유가 이론에 미치는 영향이 무엇인지를 잘 파악할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

Because memory is an invisible mental exercise, academic discussions on memory rely on metaphors. This paper focused on academic papers on Korean morphology to examine the metaphors which were used in describing “verbal memory.” This paper focused on the theory-constitutive metaphors instead of exegetical metaphors. As a result, this study confirmed that five different types of metaphors have been used in the papers to describe the following: “a space with insides and outsides and objects within such space, a certain surface and the content written or engraved on the surface, a space filled with fluid substance and fixed objects within the space, web-like constructions and their nodes, storage in computers and stored information.” The analysis of the metaphors used in discussions on verbal memory was significant for the following reasons. First, researchers could become conscious of the fact that metaphors are used to discuss verbal memory. Researchers should recognize the metaphors because they did not only serve as mere tools for description but also functioned as theoretical frameworks and models. Second, this study enabled researchers to recognize both the emphasized and neglected themes in the discussions on verbal memory. Through theory-constitutive metaphors, some information on the research subject has been emphasized while other information remained concealed. Considering that the emphasis and directions of a theory may depend on the metaphor that was used, researchers should fully grasp the metaphors used in their research and reconsider their effects on their hypotheses.
