국문 초록

본고는 자연과 사회를 균형적으로 포섭해서 일원론적인 세계에 대한 해석 틀을 제시했다고 주장하는 브뤼노 라투르를 비판적으로 읽어보고자 하는 연구이다. 이를 위해 본고는 라투르 이론의 기본 전제와 이에 대한 다른 이론들의 반응을 살펴보고, 궁극적으로 라투르의 일원론적 세계 해석이 자연과 사회를 통합하는 새로운 패러다임이라기보다는 또 하나의 사회학적인 해석틀에 머물러 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 라투르의 이론이 최근 그 중요성이 인식되고 있는 포스트 휴머니즘 담론의 형성에 지대한 영향을 주었다는 점을 상기해 볼 때, 라투르 이론의 기본 전제, 특히 “사물”과 “탈인간”에 대한 개념화 작업에 대한 꼼꼼한 검토는 실로 중요하다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 작업을 위해, 본고는 라투르 이론과 이에 대한 반응들이 다루는 주제들을 네 가지로 정리해 제시할 것이다. 각각의 주제 섹션을 통해 본고는 사물/자연이 사회적 관계라는 인간적 굴레를 던지고 그 자체의 자율적 주체성을 획득한다는 논지를 라투르가 어떻게 끌어내는지를 추적하면서, 라투르가 새로운 이론적 시도를 통해 역설적으로 스스로를 기존의 사회학적 담론 틀에 가두어 버리는 결과를 초래했다는 점과 이를 통해 결국 자신의 이론적 지향점에 이르는 데 실패했다는 점을 밝힐 것이다.

영문 초록

This essay aims to critically assess Bruno Latour’s proposition that his theory serves as a monistic interpretive framework based on symmetry between nature and society, and thereby relocate his theory as just one of sociological positions that intends to gain intellectual ascendancy not only by examining his own theoretical assumptions but also by attending to some crucial reactions to his theory. Considering the recent ascendancy of post-human discourses to which Latour s theory is known to contribute in a significant manner, it could be quite crucial to critically examine Latour’s theory; especially, an attempt to conceptualize nonhumans’ autonomy requires a rigorous theoretical verification. For this purpose, this essay is divided into a few sections, in each of which core assumptions immanent in Latour’s theory are investigated along with its intellectual relation to other theories- whether they are claimed as opposing or supplementary. Through these investigations, I reveal the way in which Latour’s theory brings a new notion of things to the fore in order to negate the social aspect of sociology, and finally argue that Latour’s theory fails to achieve its objective since it ironically renders the core concept of his theory (i.e., the agency of things) subverted and relativized in its own social acts within the field of sociology.
