국문 초록

포스트휴먼 시대에 들어서면서 이제까지는 누구에게나 공평하게 ‘주어졌던’ 죽음마저 ‘선택’의 문제로 바뀌고 있고, 소위 ‘인간 향상 기술’(Human Enhancement Technology)이라는 것을 통해 자신의 신체뿐 아니라, 본성 중에서도 어느 것을 사용하고, 어느 것을 버릴지 취사선택할 수 있는 때가 도래하고 있다. 뿐만 아니라, 생물학적 차원의 죽음은 점점 퇴색되어 가고, 신자유주의 시장 경제 체제 속에서 죽음은 더 이상 성스러운 삶의 마지막이 아니라, 소비상품으로까지 전락하고 말았다. 그러나 생명이 아닌 것에는 죽음도 없다. 존재하는 모든 것은 삶과 죽음의 특정한 조합으로 이뤄진 형이상학적 합성물이기 때문이다. 그래서 죽음은 오히려 “생명 현상의 한 모습”이라고 말하는 것이 더 타당할 것이다. 따라서 인간의 유한성, 즉 죽음은 포스트휴먼 시대에도 여전히 중요한 인간 교육의 모티브가 된다. 또한, 개인의 죽음이 선택사항이 된 것처럼 여겨지는 포스트휴먼 시대는 역설적으로 삶이 아닌 죽음이 인간의 의미를 결정하게 될 것이고, 이러한 시대에 죽음 교육이란 곧 ‘인간 교육’을 의미할 것이다. 이미 우리나라는 2017년 이후 초고령 사회에 진입하였고, 세계에서 가장 빨리 늙어가는 나라 중 하나가 되었다. 우리나라의 평균 수명은 세계에서 다섯 번째로 높지만, 안타깝게도 청소년 자살률은 오래도록 세계 1위의 자리를 지키고 있다. 그런데도 우리나라의 죽음 교육은 전혀 없거나 미미한 수준에 머물고 있다. 이러한 상황에서 포스트휴먼 시대를 살아갈 새로운 세대를 위한 죽음 교육은 놓칠 수 없는 중요한 부분이다. 이러한 문제의식 하에 본 논문에서는 인간 향상 기술로 인해 더 이상 필연적 사건이 아닌 개인의 ‘선택’이 된 죽음의 문제를 비판적으로 살펴보면서 포스트휴먼 교육의 중요한 모티브로서 죽음의 의미를 되새기고자한다. 우선 인간 향상 기술과 연명 의료를 통해 ‘죽음’마저 통제하고 지연시키고자 하는 포스트휴먼 시대의 죽음의 특징을 살펴보고, 이러한 시대에 죽음 교육이 필요한 이유와 의의, 그리고 포스트휴먼 시대를 살아갈다음 세대를 위한 죽음 교육의 내용을 탐색해보고자 한다.

영문 초록

As we enter the posthuman age, even death, which does justice to all, has become a matter of choice. The so-called “human enhancement technology” makes it possible to decide which body and which nature you use and which you want to dispose of. Besides, death at the biological level is fading. And in the neoliberal market economy, death no longer ends in the holy life, but in consumer goods. But in non-life, there is no death. For all that exists is a metaphysical composition of a certain combination of life and death. So it would be more appropriate to say that death is more of a “form of life phenomenon”. Thus, human finitude, namely death, is still an important motive for human education in the posthuman age. Even in the post-human era, where individual death seems to be an option, paradoxically not life but death will determine the meaning of man, and death education in this age will mean “human education.” Already since 2017, our country has become an aging society and indeed is now one of the most aged countries in the world. Korea’s life expectancy is the fifth highest in the world, but unfortunately, the teenage suicide rate has remained the world’s number one for a long time. Nevertheless, the death education is rarely done in Korea. In this situation, the death education for the new generation that will live in the posthuman age is an important part that must not be overlooked. In this awareness, this study seeks to reflect on the importance of death as a subject of education for posthumans, while critically examining the problem of death, which is no longer an inevitable event due to human enhancement technologies, but an individual “choice.” This study first will explore the characteristics of the death in the posthuman age that seeks to control and delay death through human enhancement technology and medical care for life prolongation. Then, this study will try to examine the reasons and implications of the needs for death education in the posthuman age and the contents of death education for the next generation, who will live in the posthuman age.
