국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 보편사 서술의 관점에서 비코와 18세기 나폴리의 가톨릭 비평가 로마노를 비교함으로써 비코의 보편사 서술이 갖는 혁신성을 검증하는 것이다. 비코의 대표저작 『새로운 학문』의 텍스트를 분석한 최근의 연구들은 비코의 보편사 서술에 포함된 문명의 자생적, 다원적 발생이라는 설정이 전통적인 그리스도교 역사서술의 일원론적 시각과 결코 조화를 이룰 수 없는 것이며 현대적 다원주의와도 연결되는 혁신성을 내포하고 있다는 결론을 내렸다. 본 연구는 로마노의 여러 저작들로부터 추출한 보편사 서술의 원리를 그리스도교적 보편사 서술의 전형으로 제시함으로써 기존의 연구 결과에 대한 확증을 시도한다. 비코와 로마노는 성서의 역사적 사실성과 인류의 보편사로서 성사가 갖는 권위를 옹호했다는 점 그리고 다신교 민 족의 고대성에 대한 주장과 아담 이전의 인류에 대한 가설을 거부했다는 점에서 공통적이다. 둘 사이의 차이는 세계 각지에서 문명의 발생 과정에 대한 설명에서 발견된다. 비코가 세계 각지의 문명이 서로 아무런 물질적, 문화적 영향관계 없이 자생적으로 형성되었다고 주장했던 반면 로마노는 히브리 민족의 계시적 진리가 전파된 결과라는 호교론자들의 주장을 그대로 따라갔 다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine the innovative aspects in Giambattista Vico’s historiography compared with Damiano Romano, the 18th century Neapolitan Catholic critic, in the European tradition of universal historiography. Recent studies on New science, Vico’s major work, have concluded that his idea autochthonous generation and autonomous development of civilizations disaggregated the unitary vision inherent in the Christian vision of universal history. This study corroborates this conclusion, presenting Romano’s idea on universal history as a sample of the Christian vision of universal history. Both Vico and Romano not only defended the historical veracity of biblical narratives and the authority of the sacred history as a universal history of humankind, but also refuted the thesis of the greater antiquity of pagan nations and the hypothesis of the preadamites. The only difference between the two is their explanations of the generation of the various civilizations in the world. In this regard, Vico maintained that all the civilizations in the world had been generated in an autochthonous way without any cultural and material exchanges, whereas Romano asserted that all civilization had originated with the Hebrews, who developed their society guided by revelations. The comparison between Vico and Romano reinforces the idea that the innovative aspects of Vico’s historiography were never compliant with the Christian vision of universal history.
