국문 초록

사명대사는 조선의 대표적인 승려이다. 그는 청허 휴정의 대표적인 제자이기도 하다. 특히 임진왜란 때 일본군의 침입을 막고, 일본과의 회담에 참여하였다. 그가 일본에 끌려간 조선인 포로를 송환시킨 일은 탁월한 공적이기도 하다. 때문에 선조는 그에게 높은 관직을 하사하였고, 신하가 되기를 간청하였다. 그러나 신하들은 그를 천한 승려로 묘사하였고, 유학자들은 사명당의 공적을 칭송하면서도 수행자의 본분을 염려하기도 하였다. 이와 같은 충성스러운 장수의 인식과 평가와는 달리 사명당은 수행자였다. 그가 전쟁에 참여한 것은 국가와 부모, 스승과 중생의 은혜에 보답하기 위한 것이라고 하였다. 아울러 나라와 중생을 구제하기 위해 적진의 한복판에 있었지만, 수행과 산중을 그리워하였다. 결국 사명당의 충의는 그동안의 지배적인 해석과는 달리 불교정신에 바탕을 두고 있었다.

영문 초록

saint Sa-myung is a representative monk of Choseon. He is also a representative disciple of Ch’ǒnghǒ Hyuchǒng(淸虛休靜) In particular, during the Imjin War, invaded the invasion of Japan and participated in talks with Japan. The repatriation of a Korean prisoner who was taken to Japan is also an outstanding achievement. Because of this, Seonjo(宣祖) gave him high office, and he begged to be his servant. However, the servants described him as a poor monk. In other words, Confucian scholars praised the achievements of the Missionary Party, but were also concerned about the duties of the practitioners. Unlike the recognition and evaluation of such a loyal longevity, saint Sa-myung is the Monk. He said that his participation in the war was to repay the grace of the nation, parents, teachers, and regeneration. He was in the midst of the enemy to save the nation and the people, but he missed the practice and mountains. In the end, the loyalty of saint Sa-myung was based on the Buddhist spirit, unlike the dominant interpretation of the past.
