국문 초록

이 논문은 임진왜란 초반 조선과 명의 군사적 협력을 통해서 전통시기 한중 관계를 규명하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 임진왜란 초기 약 4개월 동안 조선의 명에 대한 군사지원 요청과 명의 파병결정 과정을 심층적으로 분석했다. 연구는 명의 파병이 속국 조선의 간절한 요청과 명의 승인에 따른 결과라는 기존의 지배적인 관점과는 다른 결론에 도달했다. 무엇보다도 조선은 군사지원 요청에 대해 매우 조심스러웠다. 조선은 일차적으로 스스로 문제를 해결하고자 했고, 명군은 최소한으로 제한하고자 했다. 그것은 식량만이 아니라 대군의 존재가 야기할 수도 있는 여러 가지 사회정치적 문제들이 우려되었기 때문이다. 명의 경우에도 다른 나라에 대한 군사적 개입은 인적·물적 비용이 수반되므로 바람직하지 않았고, 따라서 조선에 대한 파병에 유보적이었다. 다만 일본이 자신을 공격하겠다고 선언하고, 전략적으로 중요한 조선을 점령함으로써 군사적 개입은 불가피하다고 판단되었다. 그 결과 파병의 규모나 시기는 조선의 요청이 아니라 자국의 방어를 위한 전략적 고려에 의거하여 일방적으로 결정되 었다.

영문 초록

This paper tried to understand the traditional relations of Korea and China reflected in the military cooperation between the two in the early stage of the Imjin War. To this purpose, the process of dispatch of Ming’s troops to Chosun during the first four months after the outbreak of the war was closely examined. The conclusion was quite different from the conventional idea that the deployment of Ming’s troops is a result of an eager request from Chosun and the approval by the Chinese emperor. Chosun was very careful about requesting for a military help from Ming. Koreans tried to limit the number of Ming troops to a minimum level, while they struggled to solve the problem by themselves. They worried not only about lack of foods, but also about the social and political consequences accompanied by a presence of a large army. A military involvement in other countries with a huge amount of human and material costs was not a desirable option to Ming, either. Just as long as its national security was threatened by Japan’s invasion into Korea, a military intervention was deemed inevitable. Accordingly the timing of deployment and the number of the deployed were determined mostly not by request of Chosun or negotiation between the two countries, but by strategic consideration of Ming’s own security.
