입타의 서원 사화(판관 11,29-40)에 관한 주석학적 연구: 서원의 내용과 신학적 교훈을 중심으로

국문 초록

입타의 서원 사화는 초기 유다 전승과 초기 그리스도교 저술가들로부터 오늘날까지 crux interpretum으로 여겨져 왔다. 주님의 구원 계획 안에서 입타의 서원은 불필요한 것이었는데, 관련 이야기는 성경의 문맥상으로도 암몬족과의 전쟁을 기술하는 자연스러운 흐름을 오히려 단절하고 있다. 또 서원에 관한 본문의 축자적 의미가 명확하지 않아 모두가 이견 없이 동의 할 만한 결정적인 주해란 불가능하고, 입타가 딸을 번제물로 바쳤다는 전제 하에서는 인신 공양이라는 신학적 문제까지 대두된다. 여러 현대어 성경들은 입타가 딸을 죽여서 제물로 바쳤음을 암시하지만, 사실 마소라 본문에는 ‘죽음’과 관련된 명확한 표현이 없다. 그러한 번역 자체가 하나의 주해일 뿐이다. 본고는 정경적 관점에 기반한 본문 주석작업을 통해, 먼저 ‘과연 입타가 바치겠다고 서원한 것은 무엇이었는가(사람 또는 짐승)?’, ‘그가 의도한 봉헌 방식과 실제로 서원을 이행한 방식은 무엇이었는가(번제, 성별)?’에 대해 가능한 여러 해석들을 제시한다. 그러나 모두가 아무런 이견 없이 동의할 수 있는 결론이 불가능하다면, 이런 ‘열려진 의미’에도 불구하고 판관기의 저자가 입타의 서원 사화를 통해 제시하고자 했던 편집적 의도가 무엇이었는지는 규명해 볼 수 있겠다. 본고는 입타가 의도한 서원의 내용과 실현 양상 뿐 아니라, 부족한 믿음, 자기중심적 태도, 경솔한 성품과 책임 전가의 자세로 대표되는 입타의 인물상을 입체적으로 조명한다. 그리하여 입타 이야기가 단순히 거부감을 일으키는 ‘인신공양 사화’(?)가 아니라 판관기 저자가 의도한 메시지를 담고 있는 풍요로운 신학적 결실임을 보이는 데 연구 목적이 있다. 입타 사 화에 담긴 저자의 관심은 ‘과연 입타가 딸을 죽여 번제로 바쳤나?’ 또는 ‘주님께서 그 제물을 받아들이셨는가?’를 서술하는 것이 아니라, ‘주님의 뜻이 아닌 자기 뜻대로 행한 서원은 비참한 결과를 가져오게 마련이지만, 그러한 불완전한 사람을 통해서도 주님께서는 한결같이 구원을 이루어가신다.’는 판관기 전체의 신학적 주제를 새롭게 부각시키는데 있다.

영문 초록

The account of Jephthah’s vow has been regarded as crux interpretum from early Jewish tradition and early Christian writers to this day. In the Lord’s plan of salvation Jephthah’s vow was unnecessary, and in the context of the Bible the story related to the vow rather hinders the natural flow of describing the war against the Ammonites. Moreover, it is impossible to offer a definitive and incontrovertible interpretation of the passage because of ambiguity of its literal meaning, and – under the assumption that Jephthah offered his daughter up for a burnt-offering – even the theological problem of human sacrifice emerges. Although different modern Bible translations and versions imply that Jephthah ‘killed’ his daughter and sacrificed her as a burnt-offering, in fact there is no definite mention of her ‘death’ in Masoretic text. Such translation itself is just an interpretation. By the textual commentary based on the canonical approach, the present article presents different interpretations of the questions: first of all, ‘what was the object that Jephthah vowed to offer (human or animal)?’ and ‘what was the method of offer intended and fulfilled by him(burnt-offering or consecration)?’ However, if we can not come to an undisputed conclusion, though the ‘open meaning’ of the text, we may try to identify what was the editorial intention of the author of Judges about the account of Jephthah’s vow. In addition to contents and implementation aspect of Jephthah’s vow, the present article illuminates multilaterally his image, that is represented by lacking faith, self-centered attitude(egocentricity), imprudent character and scapegoatism. The purpose of the study is to show that the account of Jephthah is not merely awkward ‘human sacrifice story’, but theological results containing rich messages of the author of Judges. The concern of the author in the account of Jephthah’s vow is not to describe ‘did Jephthah kill and offer his daughter as a burnt-offering?’ or ‘did the Lord accept the offering?’, but to emphasize also here the theological theme that penetrates the entire book of Judges: ‘A vow that is done in own way, not by the will of the Lord, will bring disastrous consequences, but the Lord is still delivering salvation even through such incomplete person.’
