플라톤의 ‘사랑의 사다리 비유’의 교육적 의미

국문 초록

플라톤의 『향연』에 나오는 ‘사랑의 사다리 비유’에서는 개별로부터 보편으로의 확장과 경험세계로부터 이념세계로의 상승이 함께 전개된다. 그런 점에서 『국가』의 ‘동굴 비유’와 동일한 구조로 이루어져 있다고 할 수 있다. 하지만 사랑의 사다리 비유는 사랑하는 자의 내적인 동기와 열정, 그리고 즐거움을 부각시키고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 몸에서 영혼, 행위와 제도, 지식과 학문 및 이데아로 이어지는 학습경험의 확장과 상승을 보다 실제적이고 경험적으로 기술하고 있다는 점에서 특별하다. 그것은 곧 사랑의 사다리 비유가 학습자 중심으로 보다 실현 가능한 교육의 과정을 그려내고 있다는 의미로 해석될 수 있다. 그런 점에 착안하여, 이 논문에서는 먼저 사랑의 사다리 비유에 등장하는 사랑의 기원과 속성 및 쓰임을 분석함으로써 학습자의 자질 및 학습동기를 점검하고자 하며, 이어서 아름다움에 대한 사랑이 현실에 보다 적합한 교육적 경험의 과정을 그려내고 있다는 것을 논의하고자 한다. 그것을 통해 필자는 사랑의 사다리 비유가 학습경험의 논리적 구조뿐만 아니라, 학습경험의 실제적·과정적 구조도 함께 드러내고 있다는 것을 보여주고자 한다.

영문 초록

This paper deals with the metaphor of ‘Ladder of Love’ which appears in Plato’s Symposium. That metaphor seems to contain enough reasons to be interpreted as an educational one, because it expresses not only the expansion of experiences, but also their ascent. Many Interprets have already paid attention to the fact that the Ladder of Love ist structured in the same way as the ‘Allegory of the Cave’ in Plato s Republic. But the ‘Ladder of Love is more than the ‘Allegory of the Cave’, because it focuses on the intrinsic motivations such as enthusiasm and pleasure of those who fall in love with the beauty. According to such an assumption, the first chapter of this paper analysed the origin, attributes and usage of love in oder to explicate the endowment and motivation of the learners whose characteristics are often summarized in the love of wisdom. In the next chapter, the love of beauty was discussed as a metaphor which describes the individual and practicable process of educational experience. As a result of such discussions, this study would arrive at the conclusion that the Ladder of Love’ shows not only the logical structure of learning experiences but also their practical and procedural one. According to the metaphor of Ladder of Love on beauty, one deserves to live a worthy life, if one ascends the ladder of love in a right way, despite the fact that the best life can be accomplished only by gaining an insight into the idea of the good. Even though Plato still considered the insight into the good as an educational ideal, he was willing to acknowledge the life of ascending properly the ladder of love on beauty as a worthy one.
