국문 초록

이 논문은 신라의 고승 의상대사의 교육론과 그 현대적 의미를 탐구한 글이다. 의상은 신라의 교육자이며, 교육사상가인데, 이 논문에서는 “미래의 자기가 현재의 자기를 교육한다.”는 독특한 주장을 탐구의 주제로 삼았다. 의상대사의 사상은 화엄사상을 기반으로 하고, 화엄사상은 4종법계라는 논리로서 인간, 세계, 그리고 교육을 설명하고 있다. 의상의 교육론의 출발점은 시간론이다. 우리는 보통 과거, 현재, 미래의 3가지 시간 개념으로 시간을 설명하고 있다. 그러나 의상은 이 개념을 구세, 십세를 거쳐 무한대로 확장시켰다. 아울러 이 무한한 시간을 일념(一念)으로 수렴시켰다. 그 일념은 ‘지금의 내 몸[今吾身]’에서 시작되는 일념이다. 우리는 과거와 현재, 미래를 개별적으로 존재하는 것으로 생각한다. 그러나 의상은 과거 속에도 미래가 있고, 미래 속에도 과거가 있다고 말한다. 과거, 현재, 미래가 분리되어 있지 않다. 과거, 현재, 미래는 개념으로는 분리되지만 존재하는 것은 과거, 현재, 미래가 아니라 지금 이 순간, 즉 일념뿐이다. 의상의 자기, 즉 ‘나’는 자/타 이원론에서의 ‘자기’가 아니다. ‘나’는 조건과 상황, 즉 인연에 따라 매우 다양한 모습으로 나타날 수 있다. 축생이 되기도 하고, 부처가 되기도 한다. 나의 불완전한 모습이 축생이고, 나의 이상적 모습이 부처다. 불완전한 모습에서 이상적 모습으로 나아가자는 것이며, 그 주체는 나다. “미래의 자기가 현재의 자기를 교육한다.”는 의상의 교육론은 교육주체로서 나에 대한 새로운 해석이며, 최근 산업 담론으로 흐르고 있는 미래교육에 대한 또다른 방식의 담론이다.

영문 초록

This paper discuss the Venerable monk Uisang s educational idea and it s contemporary meanings. Uisang is an educator and educational thinker of Silla. In this paper I took the unique argument that the future I educate present I as the subject of exploration. The ideas of Uisang are based on the idea of Huayan(華嚴), and the theory that Huayan thought explain human beings, world, and education on the basis of four universe of Buddhists(四種法界). The starting point for Uisang s theory of education is time philosophy. We are usually describing time with three conceptions of time, that is the past, present and future. But Uisang extend this concept to infinity, like the nine states, ten stages of existence. At the same time, this infinite time brought together into moments. We consider the past, present, and future to exist separately. But Uisang say there is a future in the past, and there is a past in the future. The past, present, and future are not separate. The past, present, and future are separated by concept, but what exists is not the past, present, or future, but the present moment. Here Uisang insist the future I educates present I . Uisang s word I is not a dualistic I (subject/object, I/you). I can appear in a wide variety of shapes, depending on the conditions and circumstances. Sometimes I become a beast, sometimes I become a Buddha. My imperfect figure is the beast, and my ideal is the Buddha. Man can be changed from an imperfect state to an ideal human being by his(her) thoughts and efforts. This is the educational message of Uisang. Uisang s educational idea is a new interpretation of time, and another discourse on future education.
