〈명주옥연기합록〉의 이본과 영남대본의 가치

국문 초록

〈명주옥연기합록〉은 〈현씨양웅쌍린기〉, 〈명주기봉〉, 〈명주옥연기합록〉으로 이어지는 〈현씨양웅쌍린기〉 연작의 세 번째 작품이다. 현재 25권 25책의 한글 필사본 2종이 전하고 있다. 본고는 〈명주옥연기합록〉의 두 이본에 대한 서지적 검토와 대비 고찰을 통해 각 이본의 가치를 제고하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 영남대본은 1895년에서 1898년 사이 철종 황제 후궁인 김상궁 철영 씨와 저동궁 지밀상궁인 서유순 씨 외 또 다른 궁녀가 글월지의 이면에 필사한 것이다. 이들의 필사 사실은 윤백영 여사가 직접 남긴 필사기를 통해 확인할 수 있다. 서강대본은 특별한 필사기가 없어 필사시기를 추정할 수는 없지만, 정제된 서체로 필사되어 있으며 보관상태가 매우 좋다. 두 이본은 한자 표제와 표기법, 오기와 탈락 등에 있어서 다소 차이를 보인다. 한자 표제는 어느 것이 옳은 표기인지 확정하기 어려우며, 표기법은 영남대본이 다소 선행된 형태를 띠고 있다. 오기와 탈락은 영남대본에서 좀 더 많이 나타나지만 서강대본의 경우도 오류가 없는 것은 아니다. 둘 다 작품 해석에 큰 영향을 미칠 만한 정도의 것은 아니어서 어느 이본을 연구 대상으로 삼아도 무방하리라 판단된다. 〈명주옥연기합록〉은 이르면 19세기 초반, 늦으면 19세기 중반 무렵에 전문작가에 의해 창작된 것으로 추정된다. 영남대본을 통해 20세기 전후 궁궐에서의 한글소설 독서 및 필사 사실을 확인할 수 있다. 본문 필사에 사용된 유려한 궁체와 윤백영 여사의 필체가 담긴 필사기는 영남대본의 가치를 높여준다. 영남대본은 소설사적ㆍ서지학적ㆍ서예학적ㆍ국어학적으로 그 가치가 매우 높은 자료이다. 궁중 여인들의 한글소설 탐독 현장을 생생하게 담고 있는, 살아 있는 자료라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Korean novel Myeongjuokyeongihaprok is the third work in the series of Hyeonssiyangungssangringi, which is connected to Myeongjugibong, and Myeongjuokyeongihaprok. The novel is composed of 25 volumes and 25 books and there are 2 versions of Korean manuscripts: Yeungnam University Version and Sogang University Version. This study aims at raising the values of the two different versions of the novel by reviewing them bibliographically and by contrasting them. Yeungnam University Version was transcribed between 1895 and 1898 by three court ladies including Kim Cheolyeong who was King Cheoljong’s concubine, and Seo Yusun, a court lady belonged to Jeodonggung. They transcribed the novel by hand on the back of letters called Geulwolji. One can find the fact that they transcribed the novel through the record of transcription written by Mrs. Yun Baekyeong. The beautiful style of court ladies’ handwriting called Gungche and the handwriting of Mrs. Yun Baekyeong herself raises the value of Yeungnam University Version. Sogang University Version does not have any record about the work of transcription, so it is not possible to estimate when it was transcribed exactly. Notwithstanding, the handwriting is very neat and it has been kept in a very good condition. These two different versions of Myeongjuokyeongihaprok has little difference in the contents that can influence on the interpretation of the work, so it seems that any version can be selected as the subject of a study. There are only a few differences in the titles written in Chinese characters and the phonetic transcription of some Korean words, but it is not easy to tell which version precedes even after considering such differences. Yeungnam University Version of Myeongjuokyeongihaprok has high values in a variety of views including the novel history, bibliography, calligraphy, and Korean linguistics. First, it shows the fact that Korean novels were read and transcribed in palaces at the end of 19th century and early 20th century. Second, it delivers the fluent handwriting Gungche used for the transcription by hand. Third, it tells us the changes of Korean language at that time. In short, it is a living witness that shows vividly the scenes of court ladies being absorbed in reading Korean novels.
