바츨라프 하벨의 희곡에 나타난 서사의 특성과 그 배경: 󰡔정원파티󰡕와 󰡔접견󰡕을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 하벨의 희곡작품들 중에서 그의 이름을 알린 󰡔정원파티󰡕와 1970년대 단막극인 󰡔접견(Audience)󰡕을 분석한 것이다. 󰡔정원파티󰡕는 하벨의 60년대 대표작으로 다른 작품들과 인간소외, 소통의 문제 등 유사한 주제를 다루고 있다. 이에 반해 󰡔접견󰡕은 단막극이지만 70년대의 대표작 중하나이며 하벨의 경험담을 포함하고 있어 체코의 전반적이고 시사적인 내용을 많이 반영하고 있다. 특히 두 작품이 집필된 시간 사이에는 커다란 정치적 변화가 있었기 때문에 이런 극의 외부적 요건이 극의 내용에 크게 영향을 주었다는 것을 인지 할 수 있다. 먼저 희곡의 서사와 특히 부조리극의 서사가 지니는 특성에 대해 고찰해보고 이런 특성을 하벨 극의 분석을 통해 확인하고 나아가 하벨 극이 지니는 고유한 특징을 파악해본다. 하벨의 두 대표작을 통해서 그의 극이 지니는 전반적인 서사의 특성과 그 배경을 살펴볼 수 있다. 하벨은 극을 통해 소통의 부재와 권력의 문제와 같은 인간사회의 보편적인 문제와 작가가 살아간 당시의 사회상과 정치적인 배경을 나타내고 있으며 무엇보다 이를 부조리극의 순환과 반복의 구조를 통해 표현하고 있다. 하벨은 의사소통의 불가한 점 등을 통해서 체코의 공산주의 체제에 대한 부조리를 표현했다. 교육의 반대와 자연언어에 대한 거부는 사람들로 하여금 상대적으로 육체적인 노동을 많이 하고 생각을 적게 하게 만든다. 그들이 무슨 일을 하는지에 대한 생각을 멈추고 그저 기계적으로 일을 하게 만든다. 인간이 기계화되는 것은 당시 체제가 원하고 의도한 바일 것이다. 하벨 극의 인물들은 시스템이나 시대가 만들어내는 현대적인 장치에 의해 위협 받거나 정체성이 흔들린다. 하벨이 자주 다루는 주제가 권력과 관료주의 적인 체제의 강한 압박으로 인한 언어의 위기와 인간의 소외에 대한 것이 라고만 생각하기 쉽지만 무엇보다 중요한 주제는 바로 인간 정체성의 위기에 대한 문제이다. 하벨이 보편성 혹은 일반성을 강조한 것은 초기 작품뿐만 아니라 전반적인 하벨 극의 특성이라고 할 수 있다. 하벨은 그가 살아가면서 알게 되고 보고 관심을 가지고 고통 받았던 여러 경험을 작품에 담으려고 노력했다. 그래서 그의 극에는 사람들에 대한, 세상에 대한 일반적인 소식들과 보편적 이고 평범한 이야기들이 많이 담겨있다. 이런 강조는 아이러니하게도 우리가 일상에서 볼 수 있는 너무나도 평범한 현실의 모습에서 너무나도 부조 리한 모습을 보게 만든다.

영문 초록

We study in the paper, what is the significance of the narration in the dramas by Václav Havel, and we deal mainly with his plays Garden Party and Audience. Garden Party is Havel’s first full-length play, which premiered at the theatre Na Zábradlí in 1963. Thanks to the play, Havel earned a name in the theatrical sphere. The play Audience was written in 1975, and it was rather for the amusement of friends and it contains a lot of elements of personal examples and experiences, which Havel collected in an unspecified brewery. Garden Party focuses on the problem of human speech, the system of bureaucracy and identity of the person. The characters in the beginning constantly say sentences creating somewhat fictitious conversation about fictional things and they repeat them over and over again. The hero Hugo thanks to the language and the system of bureaucracy receives the highest place in the winding-up office, but then he is not recognized neither by his parents nor by he himself. In the play Audience there are two men, a former writer and dissident Vaněk and the worker (brewer) in the brewery’s Sládek, talking about various things, drinking beer all the time and such a scene is over and over repeated. Between the two dramas there are enough differences, although they both have the basic principle of the theatre of the absurd, e.g. a repetition of the situation, story without action, and especially the problem of human speech and communication. Because in the meantime, a big event of the Prague Spring happened, many intellectuals, artists, etc., were suppressed, censored and harassed. Havel was also in the 1970’s prohibited to publish. Characteristics of the narrative in the dramas by Havel is mainly related with the language. The language and it works with neologism, which express the absurdity and misunderstanding. The specific feature is the repetition of the same dialogues in the context of the situation and the story line is simple. Another interesting feature of dramas is a certain generality. Havel has always stressed that it s not about a certain situation in a particular society. Havel dealt with not only the principle of the theatre of the absurd, which concerns the problem of language, of communication between people, the alienation of man and especially the loss of identity, but he also implied the problem of the fateful Czech social and political situation.
