크로아티아의 ‘미릴로(Mirilo)’가 지니는 민속학적 의미와 가치

국문 초록

로아티아의 벨레비트(Velebit) 산악지역을 중심으로 폭넓게 산재해 있는 ‘미릴로(Mirilo)’는 역사적·문화사적인 측면에서 볼 때, 크로아티아 민족의 고유한 문화유산이 아닐 가능성이 크며, 오히려 발칸민족들의 문화적 전파와 수용의 결과로 이해하는 것이 타당해 보인다. 본고에서는 ‘미릴로 (Mirilo)’라는 용어가 갖는 두 가지 의미의 제시로부터 출발해, 그러한 문화 유산을 가능케 하는 지리적·지형적 조건, 여타 발칸반도 민족에게서 발견되는 유사한 돌무덤 양식과 ‘미릴로(Mirilo)’에 새겨져 있는 장식과 문양의 변화양상까지를 살펴본다. 하지만 본고에서 살펴보는 크로아티아의 ‘미릴로(Mirilo)’는 인접한 보스 니아-헤르체고비나 지역에서 발견되는 또 다른 돌무덤 양식인 스테차크(stećak)과는 엄연히 구분되는 독특한 특징을 지니고 있으며, 그러한 독특한 특징 속에 크로아티아 민족의 삶과 죽음에 대한 관습적인 입장, 산 자와 죽은 자에 대한 독특한 세계관이 담겨 있다고 할 수 있다. ‘미릴로(Mirilo)’는 유·무형문화유산으로써의 가치뿐 아니라, 민속학적 관점에서 17세기로부터 20세기에 이르는 기간 동안 크로아티아 민족의 삶과 죽음의 단면을 확인할수 있는 유용한 자료라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

“Mirilo”, which is widely scattered around the Velebit mountain area of Croatia, is not likely to be a unique cultural heritage of the Croatian people in terms of historical and cultural history, but rather it seems reasonable to understand it as a result of the Balkans’ cultural dissemination and acceptance. In this paper, we start from the two meanings of the term “Mirilo”, and look at geographical and geological conditions that enable such cultural heritage, similar stone tomb patterns found in other Balkans, and patterns of decoration and patterns carved on “Mirilo”. But Croatia’s Mirilo, looking at in this paper, has a unique feature that is distinct from the stećak, another stone tomb form which was found in the neighboring Bosnia-Herzegovina region, and in that unique characteristic is the customary stance on the life and death of the Croatian people, as well as a unique view of the world to the living and the dead. The value of “Mirilo” as a tangible and intangible cultural heritage, as well as from a folklore point of view, is a useful source of confirmation of the life and death aspects of the Croatian people during the period from the 17th century to the 20th century.
