국문 초록

  이 연구는 역사적 관점에서 현대의 종교 자유와 정교분리사상에 영향을 미쳤던 유럽의 정교분리사상을 성서에서부터 초ㆍ중세, 종교개혁을 거쳐 계몽주의시대까지 시대적으로 추적하여 분석한다. 구약에서는 제사장 족속인 레위인들과 성전 종사자들은 일반 백성들과 분리되어 살아가야 하는 것이 규율이었고, 신약은 예수의 말을 인용해 “가이사의 것은 가이사에게, 하나님의 것은 하나님께”라고 언급하고 있다. 초ㆍ중세에서는 두 공동체, 두 도성, 두 권력, 두 검 사상을 내세워 정교분리를 주장하여 왔으며, 종교개혁 시기는 이 4개 사상에 새로운 색채와 형식만 덧붙인 채 그대로 이어 받게 되었다. 그리고 종교개혁 이후 30년 전쟁, 종교의 자유, 관용 사상 등에 의한 국가와 교회의 배타적 관계는 17-18세기 계몽주의 사상가들에 의하여 세속주의 형태로 다시 나타났다. 미국 독립 이후 1791년의 연방수정헌법 제1조의 정교분리원칙을 비롯한 오늘날의 정교분리사상은 이러한 사상들의 역사적 변화를 수용하여 정립되게 된 것이다.

영문 초록

  This research traces and analyzes, from a historical perspective, the ideas of separation of church and state in Europe which have influenced contemporary separatism, from biblical times until the Enlightenment age via the Apostolic and the Middle age. In the Old Testament, it was the rule that the Levites who were priests and other temple workers be separated from the public. In the New Testament Jesus says, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar"s, and to God what is God"s." In the Apostolic and the Middle ages, separatism was based on the two communities, two cities, two powers and two swords views. After a generation of experimentation, the four branches of the Protestant Reformation returned to variations of the same four models of separationism that the earlier Catholic tradition had forged, adding new accents and applications. The exclusive relations between state and church due to the Thirty-years War, freedom of religion, and toleration after the Reformation, again appeared as a form of secularism by Enlightenment theorists throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The contemporary separatism including that of the First Amendment to the US Constitution has been established by accommodating historical developments of these ideas.
