사목상담에서 치료자와 내담자 사이의 거룩한 공간(sacred space)의 주요 요소로서 경청

국문 초록

경청이 사목상담에서 중요한 자리를 차지하는 이유는 치료자의 경청이 치료자와 내담자 사이의 여기에도 저기에도 없는 과도적 상태(liminality)로 이끄는 것 때문이다. Liminality, 즉 이 한계 지어진 경계들 사이의 공간은 본질 적이고 근본적인 차원에 이르게 한다. 이 상태를 치료자와 내담자 사이에 열리는 하나의 거룩한 공간(sacred space)으로 볼 수 있다. 이 거룩한 공간을 열기 위해 치료자의 내담자를 향한 수용적 태도가 요청된다. Winnicott의 대상 관계이론에 의하면 갓난아기가 점차 자의식이 자라나며 현실과 마주하며 홀로 서는 과정 중에 필요한 두 가지 요소를 첫째, 과도적 대상 혹은 과도적 현상과 둘째, 엄마가 제공하는 수용하는 환경(holding environment)이라고 하였 다. 따라서 치료자와 내담자 사이의 거룩한 공간(sacred space)은 치료자가 내담자에게 수용하는 환경(holding envirnment)을 형성해 줄때에 가능한 것이 다. 경청은 이 수용하는 환경(holding environment)의 주요 요건인 것이다. 사목상담의 의미를 고려해 볼 때, 수용하는 환경에서 일어난 치료자의 공감 (empathy)을 하느님의 공감(empathy)으로 유비적(analogia)으로 생각해 볼수 있다. 이 거룩한 공간(sacred space)에서 치료자와 내담자 모두 내맡겨진 수동적인 상태가 된다. 이때 전이(transference)와 역전이(countertransference) 의 역동(dynamics)은 내담자의 본질적이고 근본적인 문제를 의식으로 이끈다. 이 거룩한 공간(sacred space)의 역동(dynamics)속에 활동하시는 성령을 고백 함으로써 신앙인의 심리상담의 의미를 찾을 수 있다.

영문 초록

The reason why listening is critical in pastoral counseling is that a therapist’s attuned listening brings a condition of liminality, which is neither here nor there, between therapist and client. That is to say, the space between demarcated boundaries enables us to reach an essential and fundamental dimension. This can be considered a sacred space between therapist and client. In order to open the sacred space, it is required that the therapist holds the client wholly. According to Winnicott s object relations theory, two factors for an infant to grow self-conscious and confront reality by himself or herself are transitional phenomena or transitional object and holding environment which is given by the mother. The sacred space between therapist and client is available only if the therapist builds a holding environment for his or her client. The holding environment requires the therapist s attuned listening as a primary factor. Given the meaning of pastoral counseling, it can be considered that the therapist s empathy elicited in the holding environment is analogical to God s empathy. In the sacred space, the therapist and client become passive as the dynamics of transference and countertransference bring the client’s essential and fundamental issue to consciousness. We can find the meaning of counseling for the faithful by confessing the Holy Spirit working in the dynamics of the sacred space.
