한‧중 열불열설화(烈不烈說話) 비교 연구

국문 초록

본고에서 한국 구비설화 11편, 중국 문헌설화 9편의 열불열설화를 비교하여 고찰한 양국설화의 차이점과 공통점은 다음 4가지이다. 첫째, 한국에는 구비설화로 구연되었고 특히 열녀비 등의 증거물이 있는 전설로 전해진 반면 중국에서는 문헌설화로 전해졌으며 시대적 변이를 보인 차이가 있다. 한국 구비설화는 각편으로서의 차이를 보이는 반면 중국문헌설화는 시대 변화에 따라 서사 내용을 증가시키고 구성을 합리화 시켰다. 둘째, 한국설화의 열녀는 전남편을 위해 직접 복수하는 면모를 보인다면 중국설화는 관가에 고발하여 관가에서 처벌하게 한 차이가 있다. 셋째, 일반적으로 열녀의 조건으로 알려진 ‘자결’은 한국설화나 중국설화 에서 모두 그렇게 중요하게 다뤄지지는 않았다. 한국설화에서는 11편 설화중 5편만 나타나며 중국설화에서는 송대 자료에만 보이며 그것도 두 남편을 위해 죽는다고 되어 있어 열녀로서의 자결로 보기 어렵다. 넷째, 한국설화의 각편에서는 자식에게 죽어 마땅한 부정적 열녀상으로 형상화되고 중국에서는 여성으로서의 의기를 드러낸 의로운 열녀상으로 형상화 시켜 열불열녀설화의 열녀상으로는 이미 한계가 있음을 드러낸 점에서 공통 적이다.

영문 초록

This study compared and examined 11 tales of faithful and non-faithful women from Korea’s oral tales and nine from China’s literary tales and found four different and common features between the Korean and Chinese tales: first, while these stories were narrated as oral tales and especially legends with concrete evidence such as monuments for faithful women in Korea, they were transmitted as literary tales and showed differences according to the periods in China. The oral tales of Korea exhibited some aspects as Gakpyeon, whereas the literary tales of China added narrative content and rationalized an organization according to periodic changes. Second, faithful women took revenge themselves for their ex-husbands in Korean tales, whereas they reported the crime to the district office for punishment in Chinese tales. Third, “suicide,” which is generally known as a requirement for faithful women, was not handled with great importance both in Korean and Chinese tales. It was found only five of 11 Korean tales. In Chinese tales, it was found only in materials from Song Dynasty. It is, however, difficult to say that it was suicide as a faithful woman since her death was for both the husbands. Finally, the women were depicted as negative faithful women that deserved death to their children in Gakpyeon of Korean tales and as righteous faithful women that demonstrated spirits as ladies in Chinese tales, which shows that there were already limitations with the image of faithful women in tales of faithful and non-faithful women both in Korea and China.
