국문 초록

이 논문은 20세기 초 조선의 망국 과정을 제재로 삼은 《英雄淚》 등 중국 근대소설 5종을 검토 대상으로 삼아, 이들 작품에서 제시된 역사적 사실과 문학적 허구의 차이와 교직(交織) 양상, 그러한 차이가 나타나게 된 배경을 분석하였다. 원론적 측면에서는 허구문학으로서의 소설 내용이 역사적 사실과 완전하게 일치할 필요는 없는 법이다. 그러나 그 차이나 왜곡이 매우 심각한 경우, 그 원인을 따져보지 않을 수 없다. 전체적으로 볼 때 이들 작품들의 창작 동기는 이웃나라 조선의 비극에 대한 ‘동정’에서 출발했지만, 최종적으로는 비슷한 상황에 처한 자기나라의 국민을 ‘각성’시키기 위한 목적이 더 강했다. 특히 오랫동안 중국의 ‘속국’으로 여겨온 조선의 망국은 충격적 사건이었기 때문에 이러한 ‘중화주의’의 입장에서 사실의 왜곡이 이루어진 경우가 적지 않았다. 이는 동학 혁명, 민왕후 시해 등 역사적 사건이나 대원군, 고종, 민왕후, 안중근 등 실제 인물의 사적이나 평가에서 두루 확인된다. 물론 또 다른 측면으로, 작품 창작 당시 작자가 확보할 수 있었던 정보 부족, 작품 주제나 통속문 학적 재미를 강화하기 위한 의도적 설정이라는 점도 고려될 수 있다. 조선의 망국 과정을 한문(중국어)으로 자세히 밝혀 쓴 박은식의 《한국통사 韓國痛史》가 1915년 상하이에서 출간된 바 있다. 그렇지만 《영웅루》(1910~1911)를 제외한 여러 작품들은 대부분 그 이후에 나온 작품들임에도 불구하고 단순한 역사적 사실 부분에서조차 크고 작은 오류와 왜곡이 이어지고 있다. 이들 작품은 조선 망국의 비극을 빌어 자국의 비슷한 위기를 극복하기 위한 각성을 목표로 삼았기 때문에 내용의 사실성 여부는 별로 중요한 문제가 아니었던 것이다. 이런 맥락에서 조선에 이어 자기 나라 중국까지 침략해오고 있는 일본은 ‘적국’임에도 불구하고 오히려 그들이 이룬 개혁과 발전에 대해 선망의 시선을 보인다. 이런 맥락에서, 이러한 개혁 발전과 침략 야욕의 선봉자 이토 히로부미 역시 안중근과 마찬가지로 ‘또 하나의 영웅’으로 긍정적으로 평가했던 것이다.

영문 초록

This study purports to examine five Chinese modern novels, including Tears of Heroes (英雄淚), which depict the fall of the Chosŏn Dynasty in the early 20th century. Specifically, this study examines these novels tendency to combine historical facts and fictional imagination and the reasons of this phenomenon. Novels undoubtedly employ fictional material historical fact. However, if significant differences or even extortion exists, in-depth analysis is required. Generally, it is conjecturable that the motif of those novels originated from ‘sympathy’ for the tragedy of the neighboring country and it ultimately aimed to ‘awaken’ Chinese people who were in a similar political situation with the Chosŏn Dynasty. Since Chosŏn had been considered a tributary state to China, the fall of the Chosŏn Dynasty was especially astonishing to the Chinese and it led to a significant number of Sinocentric distortions of facts. Examples of these distortions can be found in the evaluation of historical events such as the Donghak Peasant Revolution and the murder of Empress Myeongseong and recognition of historical figures such as Heungseon Daewongun, King Kojong, and Ahn Jung-geun. The alteration and distortion can also be understood as consequences of insufficient information and an intentional apparatus for thematic development or amusement. As a matter of fact, Painful History of Korea (韓國痛史) by Park Eun Sik, which delineated detailed accounts of the fall of the Chosŏn Dynasty was translated into Chinese and published in 1915 in Shanghai. However, except Tears of Heroes (1910~1911), which was published thereafter, most novels examined in this study show significant errors and distortions of even obvious historical facts. Presumably, factuality of contents did not carry much importance since those novels aimed to raise awareness among Chinese people and cope with potential crisis through lessons from the tragic example of the Chosŏn Dynasty. Furthermore, some of the novels even display admiration toward the revolution and development of Japan, which became a gradually more ‘hostile state’ to China with colonial aspirations after the annexation of Chosŏn. For the same reason, Itou Hirobumi, the leader of revolutionary development and colonial exploitation, received praise in the novels as ‘another hero’ next to Ahn Jung-geun, who was considered a hero.
