유관순 발굴 과정의 검토

국문 초록

많은 국민이 유관순(1902~1920)을 3 1운동의 상징으로 여긴다. 이런 유관순에 대해 이화학당 출신 ‘친일’ 인사들이 해방직후 자신의 과오를 덮기 위해 유관순을 세상에 알리고 기념사업을 펼쳤다는 주장이 있다. 그 지적의 타당함을 살펴보기 위해 유관순의 발굴 과정을 검토했다. 유관순의 독립만세운동이 해방 후 어떻게 알려지고, 누구에 의해 어떤 목적으로 기념사업이 이뤄졌는가를 알아봤다. 유관순은 3 1운동과 관련돼 서대문감옥에 수감된 학생 71명 중 가장 무거운 3년 징역형을 받았다. 이 중 감옥에서 순국한 학생은 유관순뿐이었다. 유관순은 옥중시위를 주도해 혹독한 고문을 받았고 이 때문에 옥사했다. 그의 불굴의 독립정신은 북한도 높이 평가해 역사책에 싣고 있다. 유관순은 1947년 2월 28일 경향신문 에 실린 박계주의 ‘순국의 처녀’를 통해 처음 알려졌다. 당시 남북 분단 위기의 한반도 정치 상황은 애국소녀 잔 다르크와 같은 인물을 필요로 했다. 박계주가 처음으로 유관순을 잔다르크로 표현했듯이 당시 교과서 편찬 담당자들도 청소년들 애국심을 일으키려 잔다르크처럼 활동한 학생을 찾고 있었다. 유관순의 등장을 이화학당 출신들 만이 바랐던 건 아니었다. 유관순 발굴과 함께 국민적 관심이 쏠려 곧바로 기념사업회가 결성되고 영화 傳記가 만들어 졌다. 기념사업회가 먼저 조직되고 유관순이 알려진 게 아니었다. 기념사업회는 유관순 모교인 이화 출신 ‘친일’ 인사들도 참여했지만 독립지사, 同鄕 및 고흥 유씨 親族 인사들이 적극 참여해 발족됐다. 영화 전기 제작도 동향 인사 및 친족들이 있어 가능했다. 1947년 11월 27일 천안 병천의 아우내만세운동기념비 제막식 날, 김구 이시영 등 독립지사들은 유관순 추도사를 헌정했다. 이들은 추도사에서 南北으로 나뉜 한반도 상황에 대해 순국선열에게 죄스러움을 보이며 민족 통일 즉 완전 독립 완수를 맹서했다. 그리고 유관순이 ‘호국의 신’ ‘겨레의 수호신’이 되어 도와주길 기원했다. 기념사업회 결성과 모든 기념사업 배경에는 남북 분단 위기 상황에서 애국심을 고양시켜 민족 통합을 이루려는 목적이 있었음을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

Many Koreans consider Yu Gwansun(1902~1920) as a symbol of the March 1 movement. It is argued that Yu Gwansun is announced the world by some ‘pro-Japanese’ of Ewha Womans school in order to cover their mistakes shortly after liberation. In order to examine the validity of the intellectual point of view, I reviewed the process of excavation. I looked through how Yu Gwansun s independence movement was known after liberation, and by whom it was commemorated for what purpose. Yu Gwansun received the heaviest sentence of three years imprisonment among 71 students who were detained in Seodaemun Prison in connection with the March 1 movement. Of these, only the student who died in prison was Yu Gwansun. Yu Gwansun led the prison protest and was severely tortured, and so she died. Her indomitable spirit of independence is highly appreciated by North Korea and published in history books. Yu Gwansun was first known on February 28, 1947, by Park Gyejoo s ‘Virgin of Sunguk(殉 國)’ in Kyung Hyang Newspaper. At that time, the political situation on the Korean peninsula seemed to have required a character such as the Patriot Girl Joan of Arc. As Park Gyejoo first described Yu Gwansun, the textbook editorial staff at the time was also looking for a student who was active as Joan of Arc. The appearance of Yu Gwansun was not only what the people of Ewha want. With the excavation of Yu Gwansun, a commemorative business association was formed and a movie and biographical writings were made. After the commemoration business association was organized, she was not known. The commemorative committee also participated in the ‘pro-Japanese’ people from Ewha, old school of Yu Gwansun, but the fighters for independence, the person from the same province and same family name clan also actively participated. On November 27, 1947, when the independence movement Monument was unveiled, the fighters for independence pay a tribute to the memory of Yu Gwansun. They apologized for the situation of the Korean Peninsula separated and pledged the completion of national unification. And they prayed that Yu Gwansun would help them to become the patron saint of the nation and people . It can be seen that the commemorative project was aimed at raising patriotism and achieving national unification in the crisis situation of Korean division.
