編年 ‧分期에서의 型式學的 접근 사례에 대한 비판적 검토

국문 초록

몬텔리우스의 형식학은 진화론에 입각한 흔적기관의 검증 외에도 일괄유물에 의한 검증을 거침으 로써 고고자료를 편년하는데 유효한 방법론으로서 확립되었다. 이후 일본을 거쳐 우리나라에 소개되 면서 역연대 자료가 결락된 우리의 고고유물에 대한 시간성을 정하는데 큰 역할을 해왔다. 그 한편 으로 이러한 맹목적 진화론의 관점은 실제의 고고유물을 해석하는데 장애가 되는 부분도 적지 않다. 본고에서는 이에 대해 두 가지 측면에서 문제점을 지적하고자 하였다. 하나는 최근 여러 논문에서 활용되고 있는 소위 형식학적 속성분석법에 대한 문제점이다. 이 방법은 몬텔리우스가 유물-유구에서 일괄관계를 검증하던 방법을 보다 미시적인 속성-유물의 관계를 통해서 유물의 단계와 편년을 구하고자 한 방법이다. 이 방법은 페트리의 계기연대법에서 제시된 편년원리를 빌린다면 연속의 원리와 빈도의 원리를 간과하고 있어 적절치 않다. 또 하나는 편년에 있어 너무 진화론의 관점에만 경도되어 지역 간 혹은 개인 간의 계층 차이를 간과한 것에 대한 지적이다. 지역적으로는 周圈論에서도 알 수 있듯이 중심에서 멀어질수록 주변지역은 중심보다 오래된 유물을 사용하는 경우이다. 마찬가지로 최상위 엘리트의 무덤에서는 하층민에 비해 최신식의 유물을 부장하는 경우가 많다. 이에 대한 여러 사례들을 들어 편년에서 주의해야 할 점들을 환기시키고자 하였다. 전자에 대해서는 속성의 상관과 조합을 통해 형식을 설정하고 이를 일괄유물을 통해 검증할 것을 방법론으로 제시하였다. 후자에 대해서도 한 형식의 유물만이 아니라 일괄유물을 종합적으로 검토한후 맥락 속에서 파악할 것을 주장하였다.

영문 초록

The typology of Montelius has established as an effective method for chronology by verifying a vestigial part and artifacts buried concurrently. As it is introduced to Korea via Japan, it has played a large role in chronology of archaeological data in the situation of a lack of the absolute date. Meanwhile, unconditional viewpoint of the theory of evolution has sometimes been impediment to analysis real archaeological data. In this paper, I indicate problems in two sides about this. Firstly, the problem of typological attribution analysis that is already used in a lot of papers. This is the method to identify the phase and chronology of artifacts through more microscopic relation of attributions and artifacts than a method of Montelius to verify the contemporary relation of artifacts and features. It is not suitable because it overlooks the principle of series and frequency of the sequence dating of Petrie. Secondly, It is pointed out that gap between classes of region or individual is ignored to be weighted toward the viewpoint of the theory of evolution in chronology. As appears by the periphery theory, the periphery area used more older artifacts than the centre area regionally. More newer artifacts are buried in the tomb of the elite class than the tomb of lower class. By giving various examples about this, some points to be payed attention are indicated. About the former, the method is proposed that the type is set by relation and combination of attributions and it is verified through artifacts buried concurrently. About the latter, an artifact of one type as well as artifacts buried concurrently must be reviewed synthetically and it should be understood in context.
