다카하시 도루의 ‘조선문학’ 인식: ‘조선어’ 문학의 위치에 주목하여

국문 초록

본고에서는 경성제국대학에 1926년에 개설된 조선어학조선문학 강좌에서 조선문학을 담당한 유일한 교수였던 다카하시 도루(高橋亨)가 조선문학을 어떻게 인식했는지를, 특히 ‘조선어’ 문학의 인식 변화에 초점을 맞춰 식민지 시기부터 제국의 ‘조선학’이 해체된 이후에 이르기까지 연대기적으로 추적하고자 했다. ‘조선어’ 문학 미발달과 대중국 종속성이라는 다카하시의 확고한 ‘조선어’ 문학 인식은 1926년에 경성제대 조선문학 강좌 교수로 부임하기 이전부터 해방 이후까지도 일관되어 있었다. 그는 조선의 한(문)학을 통해 국체의 부재를 증명하고 그 빈 자리에 일본제국의 국체를 이식하고자 했다. 한편 조선민요를, 한(문)학과는 대조적으로 조선의 순수한 민족성을 담고 있는 자료로 파악하고 이를 고찰하여 식민지 교화에 활용하고자 했다. 거기에는 다카하시가 한(문)학을 중심으로 한 학식 일반을 가리키는 전통적인 ‘문학’ 개념에 얽매인 구시대의 학자이자 조선의 민족성을 문화적 정체성과 종속성으로 규정하여 식민주의 교육을 추진했던 식민지 교육관료였다는 사실이 크게 작용하였다.

영문 초록

This paper deals with the perceptions of Korean literature by Takahashi Tōru, the only professor at the Korean Literature Department of Keijō Imperial University. It specially focuses on the changes in his perceptions of the literature in Korean language, tracing these changes chronologically from the colonial period to the post-colonial age when Japanese Empire’s ‘Korean studies’ were already being fazed out. Takahashi firmly believed that literature in Korean language was underdeveloped and dependent upon the Chinese sources for its inspirations. This belief continued unchanged from 1926 when he was appointed as the professor to the Korean Literature Department of Keijō Imperial University, and until the end of his career after Korea’s liberation. He wanted to prove the absence of ‘national polity’ (kokutai) in the Korean literature in classical Chinese and strove to fill this empty space by transplanting the ‘national polity’ of the Japanese Empire there. At the same time, he regarded Korean folk songs, by contrast with the literature in classical Chinese, as vehicles containing Korea’s pure ‘national essence’, and made efforts to research on the folk songs and utilize them for ‘civilizing’ the colonized population. One reason for such an attitude was Takahashi’s old-fashioned belief in the traditional concept of ‘literature’ centred around the classical Chinese knowledge. In addition, he was driven by his zeal of a colonial educator, who defined Koreans’ ‘national essence’ through their assumed ‘cultural stagnation’ and ‘dependence on China’ and wanted to educate them accordingly.
