A Study on Metaphors of Nation in Political Discourse

국문 초록

본 논문은 인지언어학상에서 한국과 미국의 정치담론(political discourse)을 분석하여 진보와 보수라는 정치색에 따라 나타나는 Lakoff (2002)의 국가 관련 개념적 은유(conceptual metaphor)의 유형들을 살펴보며, 이를 통해 나타나는 유형들의 양상을 대조하는 것을 주된 목적으로 한다. 분석 대상은 한국과 미국의 진보와 보수 진영 정치인들의 담론을 안보, 경제, 그리고 사회 관련 분야로 나눈 담화(문)이며, 이 특정한 세 사안들에 발현된 은유적 표현 들 속 개념적 은유를 파악하여 Lakoff (2002)가 제안한 두 개의 상이한 가족 인지 모형인 엄격한 아버지 모델과 자상한 부모님 모델을 통해 어떠한 보편성과 상대성을 보이는지를 살펴보았다. 국가 은유의 유형으로 가장 기본이 되는 형태는 [국가는 사람이다(NATION IS PERSON)]로 이를 최상위 형태의 개념으로 두고 사안별로 나타나는 국가 은유의 하위 유형들을 이념별로 파악할 수 있었다. 한국 보수 진영에서 세 사안을 통틀어 나타난 개념적 은유의 유형으로는 국가와 국민을 희생자, 건물/구조물, 여행자, 건물, 어른, 식물 그리고 선박으로 보는 은유적인 표현들이 빈번히 구조화 된 것을 볼 수 있었다. 미국 보수 진영에서는 국가를 악당, 희생자, 건물, 생명체, 운동선수, 환자, 의사, 자수성가한 사람 그리고 섬겨야 할 어른으로 보는 은유적 표현들 이 담론에서 출현 빈도수가 높았다. 반대로 한국 진보 진영의 경우에는 국가를 통일한 하나의 단체로, 동반자, 핵심리더, 하인, 식물, 부모 그리고 여행자로 보는 경향이 컸다. 미국 진보 진영의 경우 국가를 단합된 하나, 가족, 지도자, 합의 관계의 대상 그리고 공동체로 보는 경향이 두드러졌다. 국가 간 이념 별 사고의 관습성(conventionality)을 통해 국가라는 대상이 어떠한 일정한 패턴을 이루어 지식적 체계를 이루는가에 대한 체계성 그리고 이 모든 국가 은유 형성은 문화와 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 그 사회적 또는 시대적 현상을 포함한 그 문화가 가진 기본 가치에 따라, 정치 이념에 따른 정치 공학적인 전략에 따라 상이하거나 유사하게 국가를 은유적으로 나타날 수 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This study shows the way how conservatives and liberals’ ideologies are established and maintained both in Korean and American political rhetoric and their political discourses, by analyzing their conceptually structured metaphoric expressions held by the US and Korea’s conservative parties and liberals at the time when they faced three different affairs of the each state: national security, economy and society. To accomplish the goal this paper takes on carrying out an ideology analysis by examining the metaphorical language used in the discourse on each issue, and then connect that to George Lakoff’s (2002) theory of metaphors of nation including the ‘Nation-as-Family’ metaphors based upon two different models of family. According to Lakoff, in fact, those two different cognitive family models are a theoretical construct within cognitive science that explains two different aspects of American political life. At the heart of conservatism is there lies a belief in ultimate strict father morality like God. As the center of a hierarchical world in which morality is linked with power, father wants good people to be in charge. He therefore wants a hierarchical society in which there are moral ‘authorities’ who should be obeyed by its children or citizens. On the other hands, according to what Lakoff also insists, liberal ideology is believed to have been formed on the basis of the concept of Nurturant Parents, which emphasizes nurturing and empathy in parenting. This makes it clear that the two different political ideologies share not only quite the highly common grounds, but still own distinctive features of conceptual metaphors in the comparison of the ‘Nation’ as a family, respectively.
