국문 초록

목회자의 영성과 지성을 대립적으로 이해하고 특히 목회자의 지성을 경원시하는 견해가 은근히 한국 개신교회에 들어와서, 장로교회의 영적 건강에 부정적인 영향을 끼치고 있다. 본 논문은 ‘장로교회의 목사는 학자여야 한다’는 모토에서 볼 수 있듯이, 목회자의 자질을 중요하게 강조해 온 장로교회의 전통을 돌아보면서, 목회자의 영성 과 지성의 조화가 교회의 영적 건강에 사활적인 중요성을 가지고 있다는 사실을 다시 한 번 되새기기 위한 목적으로 작성되었다. 이런 목적을 적절하게 달성하기 위하여, 우선 ‘참된 영성, 목회자의 지성, 그리고 교회성장’이라는 세 가지 중요한 개념을 차례로 설명한다. 그런 다음 ‘목회자의 영성과 지성은 교회의 올바른 성장에 사활적인 중요성을 가지고 있다’는 논지를 영성과 지성의 관계에 대한 성경적 이해 및 교회사의 사례들 통하여 입증한다. 성경의 교훈에 따르면 영성과 지성은 결코 배타적인 것이 아니라 상보적인 것으로 이해되어야 하며, 균형 잡힌 영성과 지성을 갖춘 목회자가 오늘날에도 여전히 올바른 성경적 ‘교회 성장’에 꼭 필요하다는 사실을 강조한다. 왜냐하면 그것은 목회자의 올바른 소명 의식 및 교회 성장에 대한 성경적 비전과 직결되어 있기 때문이다.

영문 초록

An unscriptural opinion which regards the spirituality and the intellect of pastors as contradictory, and especially devalues the role of the intellect as harmful to church growth came into the Korean Protestant Churches. It did and still does much harm to the spiritual health of the Presbyterian Church that traditionally promoted the harmony of piety and intellect of a pastor. This article is written to highlight the significance of the maxim that Presbyterian pastors ought to be scholars, and to underline once again the vital importance of the harmony of intellect and piety of pastors for church growth. To achieve this purpose, I will consider the three important notions - true spirituality, intellect of the pastor, and church growth, and then support my thesis by explaining a Scriptural understanding of the relation between piety and intellect and by providing some examples of this harmony from church history. The Bible never suggests the two elements as contradictory. Rather the harmonious and balanced relation between the piety and intellect of pastors is indispensable for church growth because it will provide pastors with a Biblical understanding of calling and vision for church growth.
