국문 초록

본 연구는 기업의 사회적 책임(CSR)활동이 기업의 소유구조에 따라 다른 영향을 받는지에 대해 분석한다. 기업의 소유권자는 그 유형에 따라 서로 다른 경제적 역할을 지닌다. 이에 따라 기업의 사회적 책임(CSR)활동에 대한 가치는 기업의 소유구조에 따라 달라질 것이다. 이를 위해 2003년부터 2014년까지 기업의 소유구조를 주식시장의 3대 주주인 기관투자자, 외국인투자자 및 개인투자자로 구분하여 각 유형에 따라 KEJI지수와 ESG등급을 이용한 기업의 사회적 책임(CSR)활동에 미치는 영향을 분석한다. 분석결과 개인투자자의 경우 소유권정도와 기업의 사회적 책임(CSR)활동은 음(－)의 관계를 보였고, 기관투자자, 정부투자자의 경우 소유권정도와 기업의 사회적 책임(CSR)활동은 양(＋)의 관계를 보였다. 경영자의 경우 소유권과 기업의 사회적 책임(CSR)활동간에 “U”형태의 모습을 보였다. 이러한 결과는 기업의 소유권유형에 따라 기업의 사회적 책임(CSR)활동에 미치는 영향이 다르다는 것을 보여준다. 본 연구는 기업의 사회적 책임(CSR)활동과 관련하여 기업과 다양한 이해관계자에 대한 새로운 관점을 제공한다. 즉, 기업의 주주역할에 새로운 초점을 제공하고, 주주가 처한 환경 등 기업의 사회적 책임(CSR)활동의 다차원적인기업의 사회적 책임활동(CSR), 기업의 소유구조, 기관투자자, 외국인투자자, 개인투자자 특성을 고려하는 것이 중요하다는 것을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This study examines how different types of owners relate to corporate social responsibility(CSR) using a sample of listed companies in Korean securities market over twelve-year period(2003~2014). The relative value placed on corporate social responsibility (CSR) can differ because the shareholders have a different role and position in society and because of their size, which can rise to economies of scale and scope. This study investigates the empirical relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and four proxy of ownership structure. Results indicate that ownership by institutional and foreign investors appear to be good in this respect. In contrast, the holdings by individuals is associated with relatively poor corporate social responsibility (CSR) of the firms they invest in. Also this study find evidence of a significant nonmonotonic relationship between management ownership and corporate social responsibility (CSR). The relative value put upon corporate social responsibility(CSR) can differ along different types of owners. This study provides empirical support for the relationship between ownership type and corporate social responsibility(CSR) policies in Korea. As such, it provides a new focus on the content of shareholder activism, namely that shareholder background has to be taken into account. Another innovation is that we show it is important to account for the multidimensional nature of corporate social responsibility(CSR) as well.
