국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 조선시대의 전제왕권과 사림세력 사이에 존재했던 길항관계를 향약에 내포된 향촌자치의 이념에 주목하여 분석하는 것이다. 이황과 이이의 노력에 의해 완성된 이른바 ‘조선향약’의 원형은 북송의 여대균 형제가 창안한 「여씨향약」과 그것에 대한 주희의 수정증보판인 「증손여씨향약」이었다. 그러나 조선의 설계자들은 공권력의 발동에 의한 중앙집권체제의 안정을 강조했고, 주희의 정치이념을 수용하는 데도 소극적이었다. 이 점에서 ‘조선향약’의 보급과 발전은 성리학의 이론적 성숙 및 사립세력의 정치적 성장과 밀접하게 연관되어 있었다. 조선에서 향약의 보급이 처음 논의되기 시작했던 것은 중종 대였다. 그러나 사림파가 추진했던 향약은 사림파의 영수 조광조가 시인할 정도로 너무 급박하게 추진되었다. 따라서 이황과 이이는 관권 우위의 행정체계를 부정하지 않는 범위 내에서 자율적으로 향촌사회를 규율할 수 있는 방법에 초점을 맞추어 향약을 입안했다. 특히 이이는 공동체의 규약에 대한 위반행위를 자율적으로 규제할 수 있는 권한을 향약기구에 부여하면서도, 동시에 국가에 대한 헌신과 봉사를 강조함으로써, 국가권력과 향촌세력 사이의 균형을 모색하고자 했다.

영문 초록

This study investigates the political tension that existed between regal power and Neo-Confucian scholar officials during the Chos?n dynasty with emphasis on the ideology of local autonomy embedded in the Community Compact. The archetypes of the Chos?n style Community Compact are found in the Community Compact of La Family and Master Chu’s Revision of the La Family Community Compact. But the architects of the Chos?n dynasty had put emphasis on maintaining a stable powerful central government and were not positive toward introducing the N대-Confucian political doctrine of Chu Hsi. To this regard, the diffusion and development of the Chos?n style Community Compact was closely connected with the theoretical maturity of Neo-Confucianism and the growing political influence of Neo-Confucian scholar officials. The spread of Hyangyak was first discussed in Chos?n under the reign of King Chungjong. However the Hyangyak Movement of that period was pushed ahead too radically to the extent that its leader Cho Kwangjo became apprehensive of the dangers in the movement’s rapid progress. With this consideration, Yi Hwang and Yi I designed the Community Compact concentrating on methods of self regulation, provided that the local community did not exceed the dominance of the central government. Moreover Yi I explored the balance between central power of the state and autonomy of local communities by on the one hand giving local organization the authority to regulate violations of community covenants, and on the other hand putting emphasis on sacrifice and devotion to the state.
