국문 초록

‘마르코 폴로의 여행기’라는 위대한 고전을 근대시기 동아시아의 문화 수용이라는 차원에서 ‘재발굴’해 보려는 의도에서, 중국을 중심으로 근대 이후 동아시아에서 마르코 폴로가 수용 되는 양상을 살펴보았다. 마르코 폴로와 그의 여행기를 중국에 소개하는 일은 유럽에서 온 선교사들에 의해 시작되었 다. 1837년 칼 귀츨라프가 잡지에 기고한 글에서 마르코 폴로 부자가 중국에 왔었다는 정황을 언급한 것이 최초였다. 이후 많은 선교사들이 잡지, 역사 교과서, 저서 등을 통해 中西交流의 역사, 기독교 전래의 역사 등을 설명하면서 마르코 폴로와 그의 여행기를 비교적 상세히 서술하였다. 중국인은 선교사들이 소개해준 마르코 폴로와 그의 여행기에 주의를 기울였다. 특히, 1890 년대 이후 마르코 폴로를 언급하는 사례가 점점 많아지고 그 존재를 알게 된 사람이 계속 늘어 났다. 신문, 잡지, 교과서, 저서, 강연 등 전파의 경로와 매체도 더욱 다양해졌다. 마르코 폴로와 그의 여행기는 많은 사람들이 아는 일종의 상식이 되었다. 이런 상황에서 중문으로 된 ‘여행기’가 있어 야겠다는 욕망이 생겨나는 것은 매우 자연스러 웠다. 마침내 1913년 7월 중국인의 손에 의해 ‘여행기’ 번역본이 처음 출판되었다. 1920~30년 대에 이르면 마르코 폴로와 ‘여행기’에 대한 본격적인 연구가 진정한 연구가 이루어지고, 이를 바탕으로 새로운 번역서가 연이어 등장하였다. 이러한 사정은 일본에서도 크게 다르지 않아, 중국과 마찬가지로 상당히 일찍부터 마르코 폴로에 주목하였다. 마르코 폴로의 ‘여행기’에는 일본에 관한 내용도 포함되어 있었기 때문에 비상한 관심을 갖게 되는 것이 자연스러웠다. 최초의 번역서도 중국과 비슷한 1912년에 출판되었 다. 이후 꾸준히 새로운 번역서가 출판되었다. 일본어 번역서는 여러 측면에서 중국과 유사한 양상을 띠었다. 첫째, 저본으로 삼은 원본들 이 거의 동일하다. 둘째, 번역의 동기와 관련해, 마르코 폴로의 여행기가 세계 각국의 언어로 번역되어 있는 상황을 강조하였다. 셋째, 마르코 폴로와 자국의 관련성에 주목하였다. 하지만 여행기의 번역 제목을 설정하는 데에서는 뚜렷한 차이를 보였다. 중국에서는 영문 번역본의 제목을 그대로 번역한 ‘마르코 폴로의 여행기’라는 제목을 일관되게 채택하였지만, 일본에서는 ‘동 방견문록’이라는 출처 불명의 제목이 ‘여행기’라는 제목과 경쟁하다가 결국 승리하여 정착된다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the acceptance of Marco Polo in East Asia in the modern era focused on China. The introduction of Marco Polo and his book of travels (Livre des merveilles du monde) to China began with the missionaries from Europe. The first appearance of Marco Polo was in 1837 in a journal written by Karl Friedrich August Gützlaff, in which Marco Polo and his father had been to China. Since then, many missionaries explained the exchange between China and the West and the history of Christianity through journals, history textbooks, and books, and they described about Marco Polo and his travel books. The Chinese paid attention to Marco Polo and his travel books that were introduced by the missionaries. In particular, after the 1890s Marco Polo was frequently mentioned, and noticed of his existence. The path and medium of dissemination also diversified, including newspapers, journals, textbooks, books, and lectures. Marco Polo and his travel books became a common knowledge that many people knew. Thus, it was natural to want The Travels of Marco Polo in Chinese. In July 1913, The Travels of Marco Polo was first translated and published by a Chinese. It was a journey from 76 years ago the first introduction of Marco Polo and The Travels of Marco Polo in 1837 by a European missionary. In the 1920s and 1930s, Marco Polo and The Travels of Marco Polo were researched and new translations were continuously published. There was a similar occurrence In Japan, where Marco Polo’s The Travels of Marco Polo mentioned about Japan, therefore it was natural for Japan to take interest. In 1912, Japanese first translated and published the book, around the same time as the first Chinese translation. Since then, new translations were continuously published. The Japanese translation showed many similarities to the Chinese translation. First, the original source text was very similar. Second, the motivation for the translations, both the Japanese and Chinese translations emphasized that the book had already been translated into many languages around the world. Third, they both highlighted Marco Polo’s relevance to their respective countries. However, the titles for the book in each language were different. The Chinese translation was a straightforward translation from the English title, The Travels of Marco Polo. In Japan, however the title of The Record of Travels to the East that did not have a known source and competed with The Travels, eventually winning and settled as the title.
