영문 초록

The British Empire, during the third quarter of the nineteenth century, had enjoyed the unprecedented industrial prosperity in her history, by virtue of the enormous production capacity and international comparative advantage of commodity prices. Thus, the descendants of the mid-Victorians designated it, in admiration of this period, the prosperous age of the mid-Victorian period. W.W. Rostow also regarded the British economy of this period as of the maturity stage. But it is not easy to grasp exactly the states of prosperity and basic factors which had brought about the prosperity in this period. Moreover, there are many different views on the fluctuation in prices of this period aaaording to the scholars. It is due to the statistical defects in the prices of those day. Without proper understanding about the fearures of prosperity and the price fluctuations of this period, there arises many difficulties in analyzing the causes of the succeeding Great Depression. Therefore, in this treatise, to explain the causes clearly, I have made an analysis of the actual conditions of the mid-Victorian economic prosperity together with the basic factors of the fluctuations in prices of this period, arranging and criticizing the arguments raised by some scholars.
