영문 초록

Stephen Herbert Hymer was born in 1934, and died in a car accident 40 years later. In his short life, he made a seminal figure to the theory of the multinational corporation and foreign direct investment(FDI). This article focuses on Hymer’ evolving analytical framework, and assesses it in terms of modern FDI theories such as Dunning’s Eclectic paradigm (i.e., ownership advantage, internalization advantage, locational advantage), oligopolistic structure approach introduced by Raymon Vernon, Federick Knickerbocker, Edward Graham, John Cantwell etc., and Aharoni’s Behavior process approach. This paper concludes by questioning his predictions on a MNC’s activity in terms of FDI economic effect into host countries and policy regulation.
