한국 구석기시대 밀개의 사용과 기능에 대한 연구

국문 초록

선사 인류의 오랜 석기 기술 전통의 역사를 잘 반영하고 있는 도구 가운데 하나인 밀개는 우리나라 후기구석기시대 대부분의 유적에서 출토되고 있다. 지금까지 우리나라 밀개에 대한 연구는 일반적으로 도구의 형식학적 분류를 통한 특징 비교에 머 물러 석기의 기능적 연구는 거의 이루어지지 않았다. 본고에서는 현미경으로 석기표면에 남아있는 미세 흔적들을 관찰하고 실험과 민족지고고학 자료를 바탕으로 밀개의 기능과 사용 방법을 밝히고자 하였다. 우리나라 후기구석기유적에서 출토된 밀 개의 쓴자국 분석을 하기 전에 밀개의 정의와 개략적인 분류, 기능에 대해 살펴봄으로써 밀개에 대한 전반적인 이해를 돕고자 하였다. 그리고 밀개 사용에 대한 이해를 위해 오늘날 북미, 시베리아, 에티오피아 지역에서 행해지고 있는 다양한 가죽 작업 에 대한 민족지고고학 자료를 살펴보고, 직접 제작한 밀개로 여러 실험을 함으로써 작업 재료와 방법에 따른 사용 흔적의 특징과 양상 등의 결과를 정리하였다. 이러한 민족지 고고학과 실험 자료들을 바탕으로 실제 석기에서 관찰된 석기 쓴자국과 비교 분석하고 그 기능을 유추 및 해석하였다. 김포 풍곡리, 동탄 오산리와 청계리, 남양주 지새울 II, 포천 용수재울, 공주 석장리, 철원 상사리 등 7개의 구석기시대 유적에서 출토된 밀개를 선별하여 쓴자국 분석을 하였다. 그 결과 나무 또는 단단한 동물재료에 사용되면서 형성된 흔적들이 관 찰되기는 하지만 대부분 가죽 작업에 사용되면서 형성된 흔적들이 확인되었다. 다양한 형태와 크기의 밀개에서 가죽 작업에 사용된 흔적이 관찰되었다면, 단단한 동물재료 흔적을 비롯한 여러 작업과정에 복합적으로 사용된 흔적들은 비교적 크고 두터 운 밀개에서 확인되었다. 밀개의 사용 방법에 있어서 크고 두터우며 날이 넓은 밀개의 경우 시베리아 지역의 밀개 사용과 유사한 방식으로 사용되었을 것으로 생각되며, 긴 형태의 작고 얇은 밀개의 경우 긴 손잡이에 장착되어 사용되었을 것으로 추정 된다.

영문 초록

Prehistoric archaeology is an academic discipline aiming to understand life and environment of the prehistoric people. This article presents a functional analysis on the end-scrapers and their differential uses according to the size of the scrapers and the different worked materials. So in this article, we study end-scrapers from 7 different sites in Korea. It is one of the tools that reflects the history of the stone tools technology tradition of prehistoric mankind. It is excavated from most of the sites of the Paleolithic period in Korea. Until now, the study on the end-scraper generally only realizes the typology of the tools. The functional studies of stone tools have rarely been done. Therefore, in this paper, microscopic traces are observed on the surface of stone tools using a metallographic microscope. On the basis of experimental and ethno-archeological data, we will interpret the functions and use of the end-scraper To understand the use of the end-scraper, we refer to the ethnographic data on traditional leather processing in Canada, Siberia and Ethiopia. And by carrying out various experiments with end-scrapers, we can understand the characteristics of the traces according to materials worked and uses of tools. In order to examine the function of the end-scraper, I conducted comparative studies of end-scrapers chosen from seven sites: Punggok-ri in Gimpo, Osan-ri et Cheonggye-ri in Dongtan, Jisaeul II in Namyangju, Yongsujaeul in Pocheon, Seokjang-ni in Gongju, Sangsa-ri in Cheolwon, because end-scraper is the most-extensively identified lithic tool in the Palaeolithic sites in Korea. The use-wear analysis of them suggest that most end-scrapers were used for processing hides. However, it could be observed use-wear pattern formed by processing woods and antlers in large-sized end-scrapers. Therefore, it can be inferred that the use of end-scrapers depended on the size of these tools; but it seems that small-sized end-scrapers produced in the late Palaeolithic were closely related to work hide.
