Today we live in a globalised world where the contact between different nations and groups grow and this increased contact with other worlds enriches our lives. But, this globalisation is accompanied by the risk of fragmentation and of the withdrawal into a particular identity which can lead to violence and the danger of the isolationism. The Church meets a new situation as well and the question “how we can think about ‘unity and the diversity’ ‘rootedness and openness’?” ‘How we can overcome the difficulties which arise from a paradigm of the inculturation that comes out of the local culture, but which can become an identification of the faith with a particular ethnic group. How can we think ecclesiologically and theologically of a church unit-ed in diversity? This paper seeks to investigate these questions through the history of beginning of the church, especially through Saint Paul’s epistles. Since philosophy has important significance in Greek antiquity, we will examine Colossians 2:8, and the 1 st Letter to the Corinthians 1-4, to understand Paul’s relationship with philosophy and wisdom, what might be called the best parts of Hellenistic culture. The new churches were founded in the context where many schools of philosophy and religious beliefs mixed and influenced each other. Faced with a phenomenon which threatened to alter the primacy of Christ, Paul had to both denounce the distortion and, by considering his encounters Colossians, broaden his Christological perspective. The new situation becomes an opportunity for the Church to deepen and broaden its apostolic message and to define Christian identity. His attitude towards religious and philosophical speculation are somewhat ambivalent: Paul could strongly denounce false teachings and the deceits of philosophy, but he also knew how to borrow easily from the philosophical traditions - their moral values, virtues and metaphors - in his desire to order and enrich Christian life. In this way, the new Church could be initiated into a new process rather than shut itself away in its own private identity. The orthodoxy of Christian truth can-not exist “within its own eternal value,” it will remain ever the same only within a faith lived out effectively by women and men who bear the imprint of time and space. The divisions in Corinth were for Paul an opportunity to authenticate the value of unity and to develop a theology of unity by borrow-ing from the Greek vision. The fragmentation of the Christian community came from the instinct to preserve - ‘to stay’ ‘to continue thus’ - and from the instinct to stay enclosed within a localised truth, without opening up. Unity is a question of Christian faith, a way of discovering the greatness of God through others: “You who are another, you are necessary to my truth.” The Church can never be reduced to a particular identity, while suppressing difference, nor can it be compatible with a simple atomisation by mutual exclusivity, enclosing each group within its own self-sufficiency. Diversity and unity are not contradictory but interlinked.

영문 초록

오늘날 우리는 다양한 문화와 다양한 민족들 간의 교류가 그 어느 시대보다도 극증한 시대에 살고 있다. 이 세계화 현상은 물론 우리의 삶을 풍요롭게 하기도 하지만, 개방과 다양한 문화화의 접촉은 정체성 추구뿐 아니라, 국가 간의 벽을 높이려는 현상, 즉 파편 현상과 고립주의 현상도 동반하여 세계를 분열의 위험에 몰아넣고 있다. 이러한 상황 속에서 ‘다양성과 일치’에 대한 고찰은 중요한 신학적 주제라고 볼 수 있다. 제2차 바티칸 공의회 이후 토착화 패러다임의 공헌은 큰 것이었으나, 신앙과 문화 정체성과의 갈등 속에서 한계를 보여 주고, 또한 우리 삶의 맥락 자체가 다양한 문화로 이루어지고 있기 때문에, 이 패러다임은 극복되고 보완되어야 한다. 이런 시점에서 초대 교회로 돌아가서, 다신주의적이며 혼합주의적인 맥락에서 새롭게 형성된 교회 공동체 내부에서 일어나는 여러가지 문제를 바오로는 어떻게 다루는 가를 보면서, 오늘 우리는 바오로의 뒤를 이어 어떻게 다양성 안에서의 일치를 살 수 있는가를 보고자 한다. 철학은 고대 그리스 문화에서 가장 핵심이 되기 때문에, 콜로새서 2장 8절과 코린토 1서 1~4장을 중심으로 철학, 지혜가 어떻게 다루어졌고, 또한 그리스도교인의 삶과 어떻게 연결되었는지를 보고자 한다. 여러 종류의 철학 학파들이 여러 형태의 종교적 행위 및 교리들과 서로 영향을 주고받고 있었던 당시 상황에서, 그리스도교 메시지가 변질되는 위기에 처해 있었기 때문에, 바오로 사도는 개종한 신자들에게 복음의 메시지를 명료하게 전달하고자 한다. 특히 콜로새 공동체는 철학과 타 종교의 영향으로 그리스도의 유일성이 상대화될 위기에 놓여 있었고, 또 코린토에서는 공동체가 분열되는 위기에 있었기 때문에, 바오로는 이러한 상황을 비판하면서 그리스도께서 모든 것의 ‘머리’, 즉 모든 만물의 근원이자 일치의 근원이 되심을 설명한다. 결국 새로운 맥락과의 만남은 바오로 사도에게 그리스도인의 정체성을 심화하는 계기, 그리스도교의 메시지를 보편화시키는 계기가 되었음을 보여 준다. 철학이 그리스도를 상대화할 때는 이를 여지없이 비판 하지만, 철학의 여러 가치, 특히 도덕적 가치는 충분히 인정하면서, 신자의 삶을 풍요롭게 하는데 자유롭게 사용함을 볼 수 있다. 각 상황을 깊이 이해하면서, 이에 맞게 그리스도론을 전개시킴으로써, 그리스도의 새로운 면을 보여 주는 바오로에게서 우리는 고정된 스타일의 정체성 추구 논리를 찾아볼 수가 없다. 분열의 근본적 원인은 결국 ‘보존하려는 인간 본능’ ‘항상 그러했듯 […] 계속 지속하고자 하는 본능’에 근본적 원인이 있다. 이는 결국 새로운 외부로 열리지 않고, 계속 지협적 진리에 갇히게 한다. 그러나 그리스도 신앙은 다른 그룹의 증거자들과는 다른 형태로 하느님의 크심을 보여주기 때문에, ‘나와 다른 너는 나의 진리 경험에 필요한 존재, 나의 경험을 보충시키고 열어 주는 존재’라는 것을 인식시키면서, 소통과 대화의 중요성을 인식시킨다. 다양성과 일치는 상반된 것이 아니라, 유기적 관계로 이해해야 한다. 나와 다른 너를 제외하는 것은 각자의 정체성에 갇히게 하면서 분열을 가져오고, 다름을 동일화시키는 것은 억압적으로 흡수하여 한 정체성에 모두를 가두는 결과를 가져온다. 그러나, 다양성 안에서의 일치는 상이성의 인정과 존중이라는 열림의 자세로 관계를 가능하게 할 뿐 아니라, 모두를 풍요롭게 하고, 그리스도의 몸을 더욱 풍요롭게 한다.
