영문 초록

Cultural and biological characteristics and pathogenesis in experimental animals of virulent isolates and attenuated Pasteur No.1, No.2 and Sterne strains of Bacillus anthracis and other Bacillus spp. were discussed. In bovine and human anthrax reported annually from 1907 to 1965 for 58 years, there were 3 epidemics or endemics, the first epidemic from 1907 to 1929, the second endemic from 1948 to 1954, and the third endemic from 1962 to 1965. The mean cases of annual bovine anthrax reported during the first, second and third epidemics or endemics were 768±478 cases(maximum 1,754 cases), 44±29 cases(max. 105 cases) and 22±16 cases(max. 45 cases), respectively, and their epidemics lasted for 22 years, 6 years and 3 years, respectively. Monthly distributions of total 1,959 cases of bovine anthrax reported from 1927 to 1941 for 14 years were biphasic with two peaks appeared in May and in August but similar distributions appeared in other months from january to December. A total 74 cases of human anthrax was reported only during the second endemic period, 3 cases in 1952, 2 cases in 1962, 59 cases in 1964 and 2 cases in 1968, and 10 cases were dead of anthrax. Out of 74 cases of human anthrax, 67 cases (91.8%) were intestinal anthrax and 6 cases (8.2%) were cutaneous anthrax. Animals were vaccinated with Pasteur No.2 or No.1 spore vaccine from 1922 to 1969 and with anthrax(Sterne)-blackleg(No.2) combined spore vaccine since 1970. Bovine anthrax was markedly decreased by vaccination with either Psateur No.2 vaccine or Sterne vaccine, and no anthrax has been reported since 1981.
