영문 초록

Theoretically, hog cholera would seem a fairly easy disease to eradicate since pig is the only reservoir of the hog cholera virus. The virus usually does not survive long in nature, and is also rapidly destroyed by heat and disinfectants. However, attemts to control and eradicate hog cholera present formidable difficulties in the point of persistance and spread of the virus, complexity in the diagnosis, and weakness in vaccines and vaccination. In the Republic of Korea, The structure and economics of the pig industry is closely associated with the epidemiology and control of hog cholera. Considering the future growth in meat consumption, pig production will become more intensified with an incresease in herd size subsequently, economic loses will be increased not only due to clinical outbreaks but also with subclinical infections in breeding stock. Financial loss resulting from the application of control measures will continue to increase, in which the cost of mass vaccination would be astronomical to cover the growing pig population. Therefore, the present policy in the control of hog cholera should be aimed to eradicate the disease on farmers point of view as well as national situation, and also be supported financially, technically and strategically by the government.
