성인이행기와 관련된 지위의 변화가 청년 남녀의 성역할 태도 변화에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

이 연구는 청년들이 학업 종료, 취업, 결혼, 부모됨을 통해 경험한 지위의 변화가 성역할 태도 변화에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 성별에 따라 나누어 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 한국복지패널(KoWePS) 3차년도(2008년)부터 11차년도(2016년) 자료를 병합한 뒤, 3차년도 조사 당시 만 19-29세이자 11차년도 조사 당시 만 27-37세이고 조사에 두 번 이상 참여한 남성 1,170명, 여성 1,233명을 선정해 고정효과 모형을 적용하였다. 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 2008년부터 2016년까지 9년이라는 조사 기간 동안 남성들은 성역할 태도 점수의 변화폭이 작았지만, 여성들은 점차 전통적인 성역할 수행을 지지하는 방향으로 변화했으며 그 폭도 컸다. 둘째, 여성들은 취업을 통해 근로자로 지위가 변화하면서 평등한 성역할 수행을 지지해갔지만, 남성들에게서는 이와 같은 관계가 나타나지 않았다. 셋째, 결혼을 통해 유배우자로 지위가 변화하면 전통적인 성역할 수행을 지지해가는 양상은 남녀 모두에게서 나타났다. 이상의 분석결과로 청년 남녀의 생애과정에서 평등한 혹은 전통적인 성별 분업을 받아들이는 계기를 확인하였다. 그리고 좀 더 양성평등한 사회를 위해서 여성들이 결혼이나 부모됨으로 인해 근로자로서의 지위를 포기하지 않도록 돕고 남성들이 평등한 성역할 수행을 지지하도록 돕는 사회적 노력이 필요함을 제언하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to examine how changes in statuses when completing schooling, entering the labor market, marrying, and becoming a parent are associated with changes in attitudes toward gender roles. Using nine publicly available waves of the Korean Welfare Panel Study(KoWePS), we selected 1,170 men and 1,233 women who were between 19-and 29-years-old in Wave 3, between 27-and 37-years-old in Wave 11, and participated in at least two waves. Fixed-effects regression models were used to address the research question. Over the 9-year period (2008-2016), we found that young men, on average, tended to develop more egalitarian attitudes toward gender roles, but the degree of change was small. However, young women, on average, tended to develop more traditional attitudes toward gender roles and the degree of change was large. Second, becoming a worker by entering the labor market was associated with changes in attitudes toward gender roles in an egalitarian direction among women, but this was not detected among men. Third, becoming a spouse by marrying was associated with changes in attitudes toward gender roles in a traditional direction among both men and women. Our findings show that when young men and women develop either an egalitarian or traditional view of gender roles over the life course. For a more gender-equal society, we propose institutional arrangements that would help women to not give up being a worker due to marrying or transition to parenthood and help men support egalitarian gender roles.
