국문 초록

이 논문은 한국의 사회정치적 위기와 관련하여 삶과 교육에서 목적에 대한 왜곡된 의식의 문제를 성찰하고 대안을 탐색하려는 시도이다. 이를 위해 목적과 수단의 본질적 연속성 원리를 토대로 좋은 목적의 준거를 밝힌 듀이의 교육목적론을 풀어본다. 그에게 민주사회에서 교육이란 다른 어떤 목적 실현의 수단이 아니요, 모든 사람이 자기교육을 통해 계속 성장하는 삶을 살아가도록 하는 것 자체가 목적이다. 여기에 함축된 비판적ㆍ건설적 논점을 세 가지 개념쌍을 통해 구체화해보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 전통적인 초월적 목적론의 영향으로 외부에서 주어진 목적에 종속되는 노예적 의식이 문제이며, 주체적으로 단위활동 안에 내재한 목적을 자유롭게 추구해가야 한다. 둘째, 근대 인과율적 기계론의 영향으로 단순한 물리적 작용의 결과를 인간 활동의 목적으로 혼동하는 조작적 의식이 문제이며, 생명활동 특유의 최종목적을 추구하는 감각을 키워가야 한다. 셋째, 현대문명의 물화ㆍ파편화로 인해 수단과 무관하게 정당화되는 목적 그 자체에 대한 맹목적 의식이 문제이며, 수단적 과정과 후속 결과의 의미를 헤아리는 창조적 지성을 통해 바라보는 목적을 재구성해가야 한다. 이를 종합하여 결론에서는 듀이의 수단-목적 연속성 원리를 토대로 우리의 교육현실에서 목적의 문제와 관련하여 어떤 반성과 변화가 요청되는지 시사점을 논의한다.

영문 초록

The recent social-political crisis in Korea has revealed the problematic situation that points to our distorted consciousness with respect to the ways of pursuing aims and methods in social and personal life activities. The purpose of this study is to undertake a critical and constructive inquiry into aims in social life and education based on Dewey’s principle of means-ends continuity. In Democracy and Education, one of the representative works of his educational philosophy, Dewey analyzes the nature of aims based on the common traits of human purposive life-activities and presents the criteria of good aims in social life and education. In order to explicate his somewhat ambiguous claim that “the educational process has no end beyond itself”, we may investigate and discuss fruitfully the three pairs of Dewey’s conceptual distinctions that he utilizes to clarify his own perspective on the nature of good aims in contrast with the transcendental spiritual teleology of premodern thoughts and the reductionist causal mechanism of modern thoughts. The first pair of conceptual distinction is one between an aim falling within an activity and an aim furnished from without. The second pair refers to a contrast of mere results caused by any exhibition of physical energy with the ends of certain process in that the complete or fulfill what went before. The third pair discriminates an end-in-view as being proposed and functioning within a consciously developing life-activity from the end in itself independent of the concrete procedual activities for realizing it.
