국문 초록

초록 본 연구는 경제상황이 좋지 않았음에도 오바마 대통령의 2012년 재선 성공은 무엇에 기인하는지 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 2012년 선거가 중요한 의미를 지니는 것은 높은 실업률에도 불구하고 오바마 대통령의 성공의 원인을 설명해 주는 요인을 찾음으로서 대통령 선거에서 경제 상황의 영향력 외에 다른 요인의 중요성을 찾을 수 있기 때문이다. 또한 2012년 선거 결과에 중요한 관심을 갖는 것은 2012년 대통령 선거를 통해 2016년 대통령 선거의 전개상황을 엿볼 수 있기 때문이다. 2012년 선거에 대한 분석 결과 오바마 대통령의 성공에 영향을 미친 요인으로는 그래도 호전되는 경제상황이 커다란 영향을 미쳤음을 알 수 있다. 또한 현직에 있는 대통령이 가지는 우위효과가 크다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 2012년 선거결과가 민주당에 미치는 부정적 영향은 크다. 이는 무엇보다 오바마 후보가 재선에서 얻은 선거결과는 2008년 선거결과에 비교해보면 초라하기 때문이다. 과거 재선에 성공한 대통령들의 재선 선거결과는 초선 결과보다 뛰어났는데 오바마 대통령은 그렇지 못했다. 이는 2016년 대통령 선거가 민주당에게 매우 불리한 선거가 될 것이라는 점을 말해줄 수 있다. 그러나 뚜렷하게 눈에 띠는 후보가 없는 공화당에게 있어 2016년 선거가 그리 희망적이지 않다는 점은 우리의 관심을 벌써 2016년 대통령 선거로 끌어 모으고 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims at analyzing the factors having an effect on president Obama`s reelection in 2012 despite of the bad economic condition in U.S. A study on the 2012 presidential election is important because not only it provides an opportunity to find determinants helping overcome economic obstacles but also it gives an chance to get a sense of development process of the 2016 presidential election in advance. An analysis on the 2012 presidential election shows political and economical leadership of president Obama played a role in his success. Likewise, the study finds he enjoyed effective advantage of being incumbent position in the 2012 election. On the other hand, the study finds that the 2012 presidential election has a negative influence on the future of the Democratic Party. This is because In general, a presidente who run for reelection get strong support from the electorate compared with 4 years ago; however, the 2012 election outcome of candidate Obama is worser than Obama`s 2008 election. It indicates that the Democratic Party will be put at risk in the 2016 election. However, the fact that there is no significant figure in the Republic Party for the 2016 election already attracts our interest in the 2016 election.
