국문 초록

문화연구는 하나의 이론적 경향이면서 현실에 대한 실천적 개입이고, 하나의 독자적인 학문의 영역이면서 일련의 매우 다양한 방법론의 집합으로서 늘 그 정체를 규정하기 어렵다. 또한 문화연구는 늘 열린 체계를 지향하고 완성된 하나의 학문 분야로 고착되지 않으려는 본질적 속성상 그 자신의 죽음이나 종말을 내포하고 있다. 문화연구의 이러한 본래적 불안정성은 흔히 그것의 위기나 종말로 이해되는 경향이 있다. 이동연의 책 문화연구의 종말과 생성은 언뜻 문화연구의 위기와 종말을 알리는 문화연구의 부고나 한국 사회에서 이미 빈사한 문화연구를 되살려내려고 하는 성급한 시도로 오해될 수 있다. 그러나 본 서평은 이 책에서 그가 비판적 문화연구란 그 자체의 종말과 더불어 생성의 계기를 창출하는 바로 그런 것이라는 사실을 그 자신의 문화연구적 이론과 실천이라는 글쓰기를 통해 증명한다는 점을 보여주고자 한다.

영문 초록

Cultural studies is a theoretical tendency, a practical intervention in reality, a domain of independent discipline, and a set of a very diverse methodologies, so that it is always difficult to define what it is. Also since cultural studies is always oriented towards an open system and not tend to be fixed as a completed academic field, it seems to include the death or the end of itself in its intrinsic nature. This inherent instability of cultural studies often tends to be understood as its crisis or demise. At first glance, Lee Dong-Yeon’s book The End and Creation of Cultural Studies can be misunderstood as an obituary of cultural studies that informs the crisis and end of it or a hasty attempt to revive cultural studies that have already died in Korean society. This book review, however, tries intended to show that in this book the author demonstrates that critical cultural studies is the very thing that creates the moment of creation during its own end, through his writing as theory and practice of cultural studies.
