국문 초록

본 논문은 대중문화, 특히 자본의 중심부에 위치한 할리우드 영화에도 정치적인 함의가 내포되어 있다는 프레드릭 제임슨의 주장에 따라, 제임스 맨골드 감독의 영화 <로건>에 담긴 정치성을 독해하려 한다. <로건>은 가장 미국적인 장르인 슈퍼히어로 시리즈의 ‘엑스맨’ 중 ‘울버린’ 로건에 대한 영화이다. 아울러 <로건>은 또 다른 미국적인 장르인 서부극, 특히 성찰성이 강조된 수정주의 서부극의 분위기와 늙고 노쇠한 죽음의 이미지를 전면에 드러낸다. 과거 강력한 불멸의 몸이었던 로건은 몸 속에서 중독을 일으켜 죽어가고, 그 자신 또한 죽음을 바란다. 돌연변이인 로건의 정체성은 소수자로서 배척받는 현실을 드러낸다. 동시에 단단한 근육질이지만 내부적으로 병든 로건의 몸은, ‘인종의 용광로’임에도 불구하고 소수자와 이민자를 배척 하는 트럼프 정권 아래 미국의 모순적인 반동을 드러낸다. 이와 같은 현실을 드러냄과 함께, 최종적으로 <로건>은 육체성을 입고 죽음을 받아들일때에 ‘어떻게 죽을 것인가’ 하는 질문을 통해 역설적으로 ‘어떻게 살아갈 것인가’를 성찰한다.

영문 초록

This article reads the political nature of movie Logan by James Mangold based on the claim of Fredric James that pop culture, even Hollywood films, contain political meanings despite the fact that it highly depends on the capital. Logan is a film about the superhero ‘Wolverine’ named Logan, one of the character in the superhero series of ‘X-men,’ which is known for American genre. Also, Logan reveals the atmosphere of another American genre called Western, especially revisionist Western with reflexivity and the image of death from age and infirmity. Logan, who once was immortal, is dying of poison inside his body, and he himself longs for his death. The identity of Logan as a mutant reveals the reality that excludes the minority group. At the same time, Logan’s strong and muscular body with a pain inside reveals self-contradictory rebound of Donald Trump’s America, which excludes minority and immigrants though America itself is a ‘melting pot.’ With these disclosures of reality, Logan finally reflects on ‘how to live’ with a paradoxical question ‘what to do when dying’ when we meet death with a corporeal body.
