영문 초록

This paper aims to examine the Sunni legal rules on a husband having four wives at a time. The Koran allows a man to have four wives, provided that he treats them fairly and equally. Confirming that such polygamy is God’s law, Hadith (Sunna) provides, on the basis of the Koranic principles of fairness and equality, “a fair distribution of time, a transfer of allocated shares, the difference in the honeymoon period depending on whether the bride is a virgin or a widow, the equitable distribution of clothes and gifts, and the equitable distribution of love.” The four Sunni madhahib present detailed similar and contrasting opinions about “the fairness of love, the way of distribution, the abandonment of the right of distribution and right of the bride, and a husband letting his wives live in a house or a bed.”
