국문 초록

본 논문은 캘빈의 경제사회사상의 의의를 조명하기 위해 그의 신학적 근간을 역사적인 맥락 속에서 살펴보고 이를 바탕으로 이 사상이 우리에게 주는 교훈 및 시사점을 찾는 것을 목적으로 한다. 먼저 왜 캘빈 사후에 전개된 캘빈주의 및 개혁주의보다는 캘빈의 저술 및 생애를 직접 대면할 필요가 있는지를 논의한다. 다음으로는 캘빈의 경제사회사상의 근간이 되는 그의 신학은 그리스도 중심적(Christo-centric)으로 종교개혁자들과 함께 ‘그리스도 안에 있는 구속’과 ‘은혜 사상’이라는 신학적 근간을 공유하고 있다는 점에 주목한다. 이어서 흔히 캘빈주의의 요체라고 일컬어지는 하나님의 주권 및 예정론도 구속의 은혜 위에서만 제대로 이해되고 우리 삶에서 진정한 감사와 순종의 원천이 될 수 있음을 부각시킨다. 캘빈 신학의 또 하나의 실천적 근간은 구원은 물론 그리스도인의 삶 및 성화와 교회의 사명 완수는 전적으로 ‘그리스도와의 연합’ 및 ‘성령의 비밀스런 역사’ 에 의존한다고 본 것에 있다는 점을 상기한다. 따라서 이러한 캘빈 신학의 근간에 비추어 볼 때 캘빈의 신학 및 경제사회사상은 (교회)연합적(ecumenical) 자세와 실천을 위한 한 토대가 될 수 있음을 결론적으로 언급한다. 다음으로 캘빈의 경제사회사상은 그의 신학의 근간 위에서 일관성을 지닌 깊은 영적 통찰력을 제공하므로 영구적인 가치를 지니며 오늘날에도 우리에게 귀중한 교훈 및 시사점을 줄 수 있음을 예시를 통해 확인한다. 마지막으로 본 논문의 핵심 내용 및 결론을 요약하면서 본 논문의 한계 및 앞으로의 과제를 지적한다.

영문 초록

This paper discusses theological nuclei of John Calvin with a view to properly grasping his economic and social thought and finding out its teachings and implications for today. We begin with mentioning why it is necessary to read Calvin’s writings and life directly in order to properly understand his theology and thought. Then this paper notes that the theology of Calvin is distinctly Christo-centric and he had the ‘redemption in Christ’ and ‘grace thought’ as his core theological basis, in common with other reformers during the reformation in the 16th century. Within this context we discuss that only on the experience of the grace of redemption, the sovereignty of God and predestination, commonly regarded as essential ingredients of Calvinism, can be properly understood and become a source of the true thankfulness and obedience in the Christian life. This paper also notes that another practically theological basis of Calvin is that he emphatically bring forth that the life and santification of Christians and the Church as community is to be totally dependent upon the ‘union with Christ’ and the ‘secret operations of the Holy Spirit.’ In light of these underpinnings of Calvin this kind of Calvin’s theological underpinnings his economic and social thought as well as this theology can be a source of the ecumenism between Calvinism and various other protestant churches, also even helpful to a dialogue with the Catholic church. Next we show by some examples of Calvin’s economic social thought that it is firmly and consistently rooted in his theological nuclei we have examined with deep spiritual insights and gives, therefore, very useful teachings and implications even for today. The summary of this paper and its shortcomings with a suggestion for further research finally follows.
