국문 초록

본 연구는 리더십연구에 있어 계량역사학적 방법을 소개하고 이를 이용하여 이뤄진 그 간의 연구결과들을 검토하여 앞으로 나아갈 방향을 제시할 목적으로 이뤄졌다. 계량역사학방법은, 전기, 자서전, 문서, 서한, 인터뷰, 영상, 기고문 등 객관적 자료가 남아있는 리더들을 대상으로 자료를 내용분석하여 변수를 계량화한 후, 통계적으로 가설을 검증하는 방법이므로, “정성적+정략적”방법을 함께 사용하는 연구기법이라고 볼 수 있다. 이 방법은 영국의 우생학자 Sir Francis Galton(1869)에 의해서 처음 사용된 후, 미국 생물학자 Woods(1911)에 의해서 “historiometry”라는 명칭을 얻으면서 많이 알려지게 되었다. 초기의 연구들은 천재가 타고난다는 명제를 입증하는데 치중하였으나, 리더십연구에 있어서는 (1) 리더의 개인특성을 분석하여 리더십과 성과의 관계를 검증한 연구들과 (2) CIP(Charismatic, Ideological, Pragmatic)리더십모델을 중심으로 세 유형 간의 행동차이와 성과차이를 검증하는 연구들로 발전해왔다. 지금까지 계량역사학방법을 이용한 여러 연구에서 리더의 지적능력이 리더십 및 성과와 밀접한 관계를 가진다는 연구결과가 얻어졌으며, 마키아벨리즘, 나르시시즘, 모티브유형(성취, 권력, 친화) 등도 리더십에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 아울러 CIP모델연구에서는 탁월한(outstanding) 리더십에 이르는 경로가 카리스마뿐 아니라 이념적, 또는 실용적 리더십 등 똑 같이 유효한 세 가지가 존재하며, 이 세 유형의 리더들은 각각 다른 정신모델(mental model)을 갖기 때문에 문제해결, 소통, 정치적 행위, 감정인식 등에 있어 차이를 보인다는 연구결과를 얻었다. 미래지향의 카리스마, 과거지향의 이념적 리더, 현재를 중시하는 실용적 리더의 구체적 특징들을 정리하였으며 계량역사학적 방법이 갖는 장점과 한계점들을 적시하였다. 조선왕조실록 등 역사적 자료의 보고인 한국리더들을 대상으로 한 연구가 활성화되야 한다고 주장하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of the current study was to introduce the historiometry method in leadership research, and critique accumulated study results followed by suggestions for future research. Historiometry is conducted based upon outstanding leaders’ biography, autobiography, documents, letter, interview results, videos, journal articles, the contents of which were analyzed and quantified or measured in accordance with the variables established in hypotheses. Since historiometry quantifies archival contents which are of qualitative nature, it could be called a hybrid of both qualitative and quantitative methods. Historiometry was originated by a british eugenicist Sir Francis Galton(1869) and first named by American biologist Woods(1911). Although initial historiometric studies concentrated on verifying the proposition that genius is inherited, historiometric leadership research developed two research trends: (1) studies that tested the relations between leader characteristics and leadership styles along with performances, (2) CIP(Charismatic, Ideological, Pragmatic) leadership models were identified and tested in terms of their relative differences in behaviors and performance. The present study reviewed various study results that used historiometric method, and found that leaders’ intellectual brilliance as well as Machiavellism, Narcissism, Motive Imagery(achievement, power, affiliation) show significant associations with leadership and performance. In addition, studies on CIP model revealed that the path ways to outstanding leadership are three-pronged as in charismatic, ideological, pragmatic with similar effectiveness, and that the CIP leaders each develop distinct mental models, which ultimately engender differentiated behaviors in problem-solving, communication, political activities, and emphasis on emotions. We identified specific characteristics of future-focused charismatics, past-oriented ideologues, and present-staged pragmatics, along with pros and cons of historiometry. Finally, we contended that the historiometric research method should be more actively employed in Korean leadership research academy since Korea has such a rich reservoir of historic documents as the Veritable Records of Joseon Dynasty, the General Lee’s War Diary, and what not.
