국문 초록

이 논문은 18세기 조선의 무예 보급과 그 확산에 대한 시론이다. 본고에서는 『御營廳中 旬謄錄』이라는 자료를 이용하여 18세기 중후반 어영청에서 보급, 활용되던 무예의 경향성을 짚어보았다. 지금까지 조선후기 무예에 대한 연구는 주로 『武藝諸譜』및 『武藝諸譜飜 譯續集』과 『武藝圖譜通志』를 위주로 하여 무예의 발전과정 및 정착에 관심을 기울여왔 다. 즉 거시적인 안목으로 무예의 흐름을 통관하는 연구에 집중한 편이었다. 반면에 조선에서 어떤 무예가 얼마나 보급되어 활용되었는지, 또는 正祖가 『무예도보통지』에서 마련한 무예의 모범이 당대에 어느 정도 수용되었고 그 파급 효과는 어떠했는지에 대해서는 구체적인 연구가 미비한 편이다. 이런 문제의식에서 작성한 이 논문에서 크게 주목한 사항은 두 가지다. 『무예도보통지』 의 편찬을 전후한 시기에 어영청에서는『무예도보통지』에 정리된 24기 무예가 대부분 보급된 상태였다. 그렇다고 하여 다양한 무예가 일률적으로 보급된 상태였다고 보기는 어렵다. 이 가운데 주로 용검․평검․제독검이 확산되어 있었고, 우리의 예상과 달리 마상무예의 합격자가 많지 않았다. 또한 어영청에 소속된 군인 가운데 직급에 따라 무예 수용의 차이가 뚜렷하였다. 將官이나 將校 가운데 무예 과목으로 상을 탄 사람이 저조했고 활쏘기에서 집중적으로 상을 받았다. 이에 비해 군병들은 월등하게 각종 무예 시험으로 상을 받은 사람들이 많았다는 사실이다. 끝으로 조선의 무예 연구는 보다 다양한 자료들을 발굴, 활용하여 미시적 분석이 진행되어야 할 필요성이 있으며 이 때서야 비로소 『무예도보통지』에 대한 이해도 한층 높일 수 있다고 여겨진다.

영문 초록

In this article, how martial arts were popularized, and how much the range of people well versed in such arts actually expanded in the 18th century Joseon, are examined. The trends that can be found from the martial arts utilized and educated at the Eoyeong-cheong office during the middle and latter periods of the 18th century, is mainly examined here with a text named『Eoyeong-cheong Jungsun Deungrok(御營廳中旬謄錄)』. So far, studies which have examined the martial arts of the Joseon dynasty s latter half period merely consulted manuals like『Muyae Jebo (武藝諸譜)』,『Muyae Jebo Beonyeok Sokjib(武藝諸譜飜譯續集)』and『Muyae Dobo Tongji(武藝圖譜通志)』. They also tried to rather determine the development process of such arts, skills and techniques. In other words, past studies tended to concentrate upon the task of defining the very trends and currents mirrored in such developments from a broader perspective. On the other hand, there have been less studies dedicated to the task of examining specific issues, such as what kind of martial arts were popularized, or how much they were actually utilized in Joseon, or how much of the standards for martial arts laid down by King Jeongjo/正祖 in 『Muyae Dobo Tongji』was actually accepted by the general population at the time, and what kind of influences those standards had upon martial arts in general. So, two things are mostly examined in this article. Around the time of the publication of the『Muyae Dobo Tongji』, Eoyeong-cheong had already propagated and had been teaching people the so-called 24 Techniques. Yet that fact does not automatically mean that such variety of techniques were being sufficiently known or widely understood and most of all were being effectively used by the people. Among them, types of swords like Yong-geom(用劍)․Pyeong-geom(平劍)․Jedok-geom (提督劍) were mostly used, and contrary to the general presumption, there were not many people who passed the horseback techniques (馬上武藝) test. Also, the level of understanding or embracement of such martial arts and techniques varied visibly among soldiers enlisted at the Eoyeong-cheong office, according to the various ranks they held. While among generals(將官) or officers(將校) only few of them were honored or won prizes for martial arts and techniques, many of the soldiers displayed superior skills and won prizes in various areas of known martial arts. More texts and sources regarding the Joseon dynasty s martial arts should be excavated and utilized, and meticulously examined. That would also considerably help us enhance our own understanding of the『Muyae Dobo Tongji』.
