국문장편 고전소설 <조씨삼대록> 속노년의 모습과 그 함의* －노년의 ‘신체’와 ‘감정’에 주목한 서술을 중심으로－

국문 초록

본 연구는 국문장편 고전소설 <조씨삼대록>이 그리고 있는 노년의 모습 중, 노년의 몸, 즉 노년의 신체와 노년의 감정을 서술한 부분에 주목하여 <조씨삼대록> 이 담지 하였던 노년에 대한 인식의 일면을 살펴본 것이다. 동양적 사유에서는 나이 듦의 의미를 정신에서 우선적으로 찾으려는 경향이 있지만, 노년을 온전히 이해하기 위해서는 그들의 신체와 감정도 배제할 수 없기 때문이다. 일반적으로 국문장편 고전소설은 정신적으로 원숙한, 이상적이며 규범적인 노년상을 지지하는 것으로 그간 분석되었는데, 노년의 몸에 관한 <조씨삼대록>의 서술을 검토해본 결과 노년을 바라보는 시각이 온전히 규범적이지만은 않음을 확인할 수 있었다. <조씨삼대록>의 노년인식을 이해하기 위해 본 연구에서는 젊은이보다 건강하고 왕성하게 묘사되는 노년의 신체에 대한 언급과, 억제되지 않는 노년의 감정을 진솔하게 서술한 내용을 중심으로 검토하였다. 검토 결과 이 작품은 몸의 층위에서 노년을 이해하는 경우, 그들을 무기력한 존재가 아닌 활력적인 존재로 바라보고 있으며, 혈기가 미정한 젊은이들과 다를 바 없이 정신적으로 미성숙한 부분이 있기도 하고 몸의 욕망을 우선적으로 따를 수도 있는 현실적인 존재들로 이해하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 노년의 인물들이 이상적인 기대와 달리 미완의 존재 들이라는 점을 확인했다고 하여 노년의 경험이나 연륜을 전적으로 부정하지는 않는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 몸의 문제에 주목하여 본 <조씨삼대록> 속 노년의 모습은 이상적인 노년상을 정해두고 그것을 잣대 삼아 노년을 평가하고 타자화하려는 인식에 대한 경계로서 의미가 있으며, 인간의 본성과 개인의 문제에 관심을 기울였던 <조씨삼대록> 전반의 특징을 뒷받침해주는 하나의 증거로서도 의미가 있다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

This study about Korean Classical long Novel examines on its portrait of elderly people, especially focusing on the description on their bodies and emotions, thus investigates an aspect of the cognizance of the aged the novel carries. In oriental way of thinking, the meaning of aging tends to be sought from our minds first. But body and emotion can’t be overlooked to fully understand the aged. Korean Classical long Novel ls have been commonly understood to support an ideal and normative image of the aged that is mentally mature, while an examination on the description of on them confirms that its view on the aged is not entirely normative. To understand its cognizance of the aged, this study concentrated upon its mentions of bodies of the aged which are described more healthy and vigorous than those of the young, and upon the frank description of the uncontrollable emotions of the aged. As the result, it can be said that in physical aspect, the novel sees the aged as vigorous ― instead of impuissant ―, and realistic beings who can preferentially follow bodily desires, and are as mentally immature as red-blooded youth. It can be also confirmed that it doesn’t entirely devaluate the experience and age of the aged just because they are unfinished beings who can’t meet the ideal expectation. Image of the aged in as seen in physical aspect represents much as a vigilance against the understanding that fixates an ideal image of the aged and use it as a measure to evaluate and alienate them. It also has a significant meaning as a proof of the overall characteristic of as a novel that is concerned about human nature and matters of individuals.
