盧守愼의 초기 사상과 경세론

국문 초록

본 논문은 소재 노수신(1515~1590)의 유배기 이전의 저작에 나타난 황극론과 공부론을 그의 경세론과 연관하여 고찰한 것이다. 소재는 30세 때세자에게《서경》을 강의하면서 ‘극을 중으로 해석해서는 안 된다’고 하여 주희의 황극론과 일치하는 발언을 하였다. 그러나 그는 이 서연강의에서 ‘극은 바로 미발의 중이다’라고 하여 육구연의 황극론을 지지하는 발언을 하기도 하였다. 서연강의 내용을 살펴보면 소재가 극을 정치적인 중도(中 道)․중립(中立)을 의미하는 중으로 해석해서는 안 된다고 본 주희의 정치적인 입장만을 수용했고, 극을 미발의 중으로 해석하는 문제에 있어서는 육구연의 황극론을 긍정하고 있었다는 사실을 알 수 있다. 소재는 또한 서연 강의에서 격물치지에서 성의로 나아가는 공부순서를 강조한 주희의 공부론을 지지하였다. 소재는 훈구관료들이 사림을 탄압하고 있던 혼란한 정치상 황을 극복하고 사림의 정치적 진출을 도모하기 위해서는 군주의 도덕적 판단능력을 제고시키는 것이 가장 시급한 문제라고 판단하였다. 이러한 문제 의식 하에 서연강의에서 격물치지의 중요성을 거듭 역설하였던 것이다. 그러나 소재가 20대 후반에 주자학의 격물 공부를 진정으로 긍정하고 있었던 것은 아니다. 이는 과거의 답안으로 작성한 〈구사어삼대지하, 유공불호명 론(求士於三代之下, 惟恐不好名論)〉을 살펴보면 알 수 있다. 소재는 이 글에서 예제(禮制) 등의 객관 규범을 준수하여 마음의 도덕법칙을 회복하는 공부 태도를 ‘소인유(小人儒)’의 공부로 규정하고, 이러한 공부를 하는 사람은 나라가 무너지는 것을 막는 관료는 될 수 있지만 성인의 경지에 함께 들어갈 수 없을 것이라고 하였다. 소재는 또한 31세 때 주자학의 격물 공부를 비판하고 양명학의 공부론을 지지하는 내용의 한시를 창작하였다. 서연강의의 내용과 과거 답안, 그리고 위의 한시를 살펴보면, 소재가 20대 후반에 공식적으로 지지했던 주자학은 경세를 위한 방편에 불과했고 그가 진정으로 추구한 학문은 양명학이었음을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study presents an investigation into the Hwanggeukron and Gongburon of Sojae Noh Su-shin(1515~1590) in his works before his exile in relation to his Gyeongseron. Teaching Book of History to the crown prince at age 30, he said Extreme must no be interpreted as neutral, which matches the Hwanggeukron by Chu-Hsi. However, at the same time, he also made a comment that supported the Hwanggeukron by Yuk Gu-yeon by saying, Ultimate is the neutral of unformed. A look at his Seoyeon lectures reveals that Sojae accepted only the political position of Chu-Hsi that maintained Ultimate should not be interpreted as neutral that means the middle path or neutrality and that he agreed with the Hwanggeukron by Yuk Go-yeon for the issue of interpreting Ultimate as the neutral of unformed. In his Seoyeon lectures, he also supported the Gongburon by Chu-Hsi who emphasized the study order toward sincerity from Gyeokmulchiji. He judged it s the most urgent to help monarchs increase their moral judgments in order to overcome the chaotic political situation in which the Hungu officials oppress Sarims and to help Sarims make a debut in the political scene. It s based on such perception of the issues that he repeated emphasized the importance of Gyeokmulchiji in his Seoyeon lectures. But one cannot say that he accepted the gyeokmul study of neo-Confucianism truly positively in his late twenties, which is well understood in his answer at the state exam, Gusaeosamdaejiha, Yugongbulhomyeongron. In his answer, he defined the study attitude of observing objective rules such as etiquette and institution and recovering the moral principles in the mind as the study of Soinyu and maintained that such a study would produce official to prevent a country from collapsing but not to enter the state of saint. After being removed from the position at 31, he created a Chinese poem in which he criticized the Gyeokmul study of neo-Confucianism and supported the Gongburon of Yangmyeonghak. Judging from his Seoyeon lectures, his answer at the exam, and his Chinese poem to support the Gongburon of Yangmyeonghak, it s clear that he officially supported neo-Confucianism in his late twenties as a means of Gyeongse and truly sought after Yangmyeonghak.
