퇴계 경학과 경세학의 일면

국문 초록

퇴계는 주자학자이면서도 주자학만을 고수하지는 않았다. 퇴계학의 이러한 면모는 그의 경학과 경세학에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 퇴계는 주자 경학에 대한 깊은 이해를 바탕으로 사서삼경의 난해한 구절에 대하여 정확한 번역과 해석을 시도하였다. 그러나 퇴계는 때로 자신의 독자적 사유에 의거하여 경전을 번역하고 해석하기도 하였다. 이는 우암이 비판하였듯이 주자학적 경전해석에서 벗어난 지점이라고 할 수 있다. 한편 퇴계는 경세학에서도 주자의 그것을 계승하면서도 또 다른 지점을 보여주고 있다. 군주론과 신권론은 주자의 주장을 계승하였지만, 붕당론에서는 소인을 포용하고자 하였으며 외세론에서는 주화론을 주장하기도 하였는데, 이 지점은 분명 주자학파의 그것과 일정한 차별성을 지닌다. 이러한 퇴계의 경학과 경세학은 조선후기 주자학파 뿐 아니라, 실학파의 사상에도 일정한 영향력을 미쳤다.

영문 초록

Although Toegye was an eminent scholar who belonged to the Chu Hsi School , he expanded his study beyond Chu Hsi philosophy. This can be found in his understanding about the Study of Confucius Classics (Kyunghak) and the Administrative Studies(Kyungsehak). Toegye attempted to accurately translate and interpret difficult phrases of the Four Books and the Three Classics (Saseosamkyung). However, he also interpreted the Confucian Classics with his own philosophy. This shows that his interpretations are beyond the Chu Hsi School’s understanding about the Confucius Classics, as Wooam critiques. In the meantime, Toegye’s administrative studies show the same pattern. While he inherited Chu Hsi’s teaching about the theory of monarchy and the theory of subjects, he attempted to include Soin in the theory of political parties and supported the theory of peace in his political theory. This obviously shows differences from the Chu Hsi School’s teaching. His philosophy not only influenced the Chu Hsi School in the late Joseon Dynasty, but also influenced the thoughts of the Silhak School .
