소스 커뮤니티 관점에서의 박물관 전시와 쟁점들

국문 초록

본 연구는 박물관 전시에 있어서 소스 커뮤니티 관점의 등장과 배경이 어떠했는지 주로 서구의 박물관 흐름을 짚어보면서 고찰하고자 한 것이다. 이에 소스 커뮤니티 관점의 태동과 관련한 박물관계의 지각변동을 후기식민주의 담론, 전시구조(전시 주체와 객체 간의 관계)의 문제, 전시의 다원화와 다양성, 역사인식과 주체성의 문제, 전시재현 등 다각도로 접근하여 분석해보고자 하였다. 연구의 과정에서 필자는 소스 커뮤니티 전시와 관련된 박물관을 답사하거나 기존 논문을 검토하는 등의 연구방법을 취하였다. 박물관 전시에서의 소스 커뮤니티적 관점은 북미의 인류학박물관을 주축으로 후기 식민주의 담론에 힘입어 생성·성장하였다. 인류학자 제임스 클리포드는 소스 커뮤니티와의 협업을 통한 박물관 운영에 관여하며 전시주체와 객체에 대한 성찰적 연구를 진행한 바 있다. 그는 양자 간 호혜성의 문제를 제기하면서 소스 커뮤니티와의 협업이 그리 녹록치 않음을 언급, 이에 대한 박물관계의 많은 노력이 필요함을 시사 했다. 한편 유럽의 경우 소스 커뮤니티라는 용어가 박물관 경영이나 학문적 성과에 직접적으로 등장하지는 않으나 ‘소스 커뮤니티적 관점’을 근간으로 하는 움직임은 신박물관 시대 이후 꾸준히 있어왔다. 특히 에코뮤지엄 개념은 ‘사람’과 ‘공동체’에 대한 강조를 중요시하며 새로운 전시담론으로 부상, 전시의 다원화와 다양성을 이끌었다. 소스 커뮤니티 관점에서의 박물관 전시는 새로운 역사인식 즉 역사의 주체성 을 강조하고자 하는 학문적 풍토에서 더 빛을 발했다. 이 같은 역사인식은 기존 박물관 자료의 재해석과 공동체의 ‘목소리’를 중요하게 여기며 포스트박물관 시대를 열었는가 하면, 박물관 전시재현에 있어서 타문화의 해석을 소스 커뮤니티 관점에서 시도하고자 하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to explore museum exhibitions and issues from the point of view of source community. First this study tried to find a theoretical background of the factors of formations on source community in operation of museums. Source community is related with the museum paradigm produced by the new thought generated in western society in the 1980s such as post-colonialism. North American museums, especially led progresses of a viewpoint in source communities - Native Americans participants. They reflected on ‘Otherization’ in period of imperialism, and attempted to collaborate with Natives. In Europe, when the ‘new museology’ theory appeared, there was a big wave of change in the planning of exhibitions. The changes occurred in these two areas-North America and Europe had different theoretical backgrounds and their terms were not identical but under the change they had the common premise in trying to manage exhibitions that focused on ‘people’ and the ‘community’. In the socio-cultural flow, the appearance of source community was a critical role to form a new frame in exhibition. In addition, this paper analyzes the change of relationship between the subject and the object in exhibition about the source community participants. The museum with source community tried to produce exhibitions standing for native people’s position and focusing on native people’s voice. These changes pulled down the vertical power structure between the subject and the object in exhibition that was formed in the time of imperialism, and their correlation became an important factor in museum exhibition. Nevertheless this study judged that this new viewpoint has some problems in proceeding the actual exhibition. Especially the problem of reciprocity can occur at any time between the subject and the object in an exhibition. It sometimes gets concerned that there would be conflicts between them and the exhibition manager on different opinions.
